Recte looks at the 1995 Ammy Draft

A variation of a time honored feature. Rather than going into detail pick by pick....I'm going to look at it from different angles.
1995 MBBA Ammy Draft

The #1 Pick, Redux
Buffalo thought they had a no-brainer when they took pitcher Cletus Bullrush, Jr. with the first pick in the draft. Until this year, he's been a disappointment. Even now, there are at least two players that they'd probably want for sure instead. Second overall pick Roman Empire (Greenville) has established himself as a true superstar, and having now moved to shortstop where he is plus defensively and plus-plus offensively is really a rare player. Baltimore's Daniel Labrie, 6th overall pick, was the most MBBA-ready of this crop and has not disappointed. HIndsight being 20-20-, two other starting pitchers drafted in the first round look to have brighter futures than Bullrush....and both are members of the Vancouver Mounties. Ben "Martini" Walsh (7th overall) is finally starting to live up to expectations this year. Meanwhile, the real gem of the first round lasted all the way until the 24th overall pick...Robbie "Silent Bob" Sargent. If you wonder how Joe managed to turn Vancouver around, the beginnings are in this draft.

First Round Flop!
The biggest flop? Fifth overall pick by Hawaii: C Kevin Bulder. Career .183 hitter. At this point the Tropics would be happy with him becoming a "poor man's Robin Larker". At this point he's a wasted pick.....just think if Hawaii had grabbed Labrie here.

Best Second Round Value
Buffalo's #2 pick Dave "Big Dumb" Blain was well on his way until injuries ended his career. The Win Shares leader thus far besides Blain is Montreal's 36th overall pick, SP Michael McNeill. Tons of up and coming hot shots in the second round, including #1 overall prospect Cory Warr (46th overall).

Best Value Third Round and Beyond
466th overall pick: Jorge Sanchez of the Las Vegas Hustlers. He doesn't have a starting job yet, and he's blocked by one iconic veteran (Hinson) and one hotshot prospect (Desi Stanley), but someone will eventually give this guy a shot. A career .339 hitter in just over 100 at-bats.

Other notes:
- 9 guys from the first round have already hung it up, the highest being 15th overall pick 2B Jody Williams (Madison).

- Highest pick still active yet to reach the majors is 8th overall pick Jeffrey Baeza, pitcher, New Orleans. Currently in AAA, he should be up soon and now projects to be a shutdown closer.

I was with LB during this draft. Took Molnar in round 1. He still projects as a 3.5star prospect and is just 22 years old. He probably won't be a stud but he still has time to be a decent starter in the future.

How the hell does the #2 guy in win shares, drafted in the third round, not make it ahead of Sanchez? I smell author bias!
