With that, I’ll start by reminding everyone that the initial 2058 World Rankings of every starter is a carry over from the end of 2057, and that the overall point values each pitcher has carried has slowly been dwindling away from inactivity. I’ll plan to post bi-weekly updates, but it may be quicker or longer, of course, depending on things going on.

I should note also that I’m still fiddling with the details of the script I’ve written. It’s, like, 99% there, but I’ve still got a couple weird little things that make my calculations off by a day. I figure I’ll work it out soonish, but it’s clearly good enough for the moment. Regardless, there’s some chance a few numbers might squinch a little over time. Shouldn’t affect things much, if any, in the big picture.

Anyway…here we go with our Ranking of the World’s Best Starting Pitchers:

We’re two weeks into the season, but if you’ve followed the process over from last year, most of the names at the top of the list shouldn’t be too unfamiliar. Hector Silva remains on top, but Dave Corfield (after hanging in the bottom half of the top 10 last season) has stepped up and made his challenge. Fact is that Corfield was #1 for four days from the 10th of April to the 13th.

Montreal’s Kinzo Iwamoto is falling a shade from the #2 slot that came as a result of his post-season blitz. Christ Thompson returns, this time with Long Beach. The River Monsters’ Yoshii Takuda had a solid start to the season, pushing up to the #12 slot.

A month into the season and it’s Silva and Seldon making Charm City look golden in the #1 and #3 slots. Corfield has backed down a couple notches. Greg Shaw is knocking on the door again, as is San Fernando’s Andy Cantrell and Las Vegas’s Mike Anderson. By points, their close, but it’s interesting that the system is stabilizing (as it did when Randy first did this), and the guys like Shaw and Lindsay ad Iwamoto, and Nakamura, just to grab a few names, seem to fit that mold of “really good pitcher,” but a guy who isn’t able to quite get over the hump to be elite. We’ll see how the season plays out, but I admit I love the stories inherent in these Top 100 lists when you get to looking at them.

A couple names of note: Sacramento’s Robert Hansen has slipped down to #30. Alaric Wullenweber, after a valiant fight to get to into the 20s last year, has now dropped down to #51 in the world. Father time comes for everyone, it seems. Speaking of which, Carlos Flores is still on the ranking lists at #66, though he’s falling quickly after having been inactive for a couple weeks.

As a procedural note, there are still four guys on the list who haven’t made a start in 2058, yet (Days Inactive > 190). Given that they lose a point per day until they start again, I suspect they’ll be off the charts come the next two-week period.

All right, then. Now we’re seeing a little separation as Hector Silva is putting distance between himself and the second place pitcher, which right now is Dave Corfield. Silva’s lead as Best Pitcher In the World was about 15 points two weeks ago, but is now approaching 30. At that margin it seems clear he’s got the upper hand.

It’s of some note that his teammate has dropped off the pace a bit and is now down at #8, leaving space for Louisville’s Greg Shaw to flex his muscles. I see Chicago’s Dirk Bessi (#7) and Brooklyn’s Ollie Lowrey (#9) are back in the mix again. They’re a little yo-yo-like right now, but it’s hard not to keep your eye on them.

A little further downlist, I note that Vancouver’s Gamal bin Badr has been doing yeoman’s work in the absence of Phil Cole, and has worked himself up into the top 20.

I’m finding it hard not to check on Wullenweber and Flores. Wulbs is hanging in there down in the 40s, and poor Flores is in freefall from not starting. It’s going to be close, but I expect this will be the last time he’s on this list. For Bikini fans, I note that our only entry in the top 100 is Samuel Nebraska, who has worked himself back into the #50s after struggling horrifically in the early frames of the season.

There’s always something interesting going on in the world of The Best Starting Pitcher In the World, right? Today, as we get to the end of May, the most interesting thing is how stable the top rung is getting. Silva at top. Corfield second. Shaw hanging around.

Of some interest is Nashville’s Clayton making a mid-season move. He rose pretty high in post season splurge there for a bit. Here he is again registering in at #7 behind fellow Bluebird Barney Lindsay, who just keeps pitching. Nice to see San Antonio’s Sakutaro Kawano up in the top ten, too. The Outlaws are a couple games over .500, and he’s a big part of why.

Kinda proud of having 4 of my 5 starters in the top 100, including 2 in the top 50. The strategy I'm employing, which hurts my old school soul something fierce, let me tell you, seems to be working out.

It's June 15, and we're seeing things settle out pretty well at the top, it seems. Right now this is Hector Silva and Dave Corfield's conversation, with Silva at the helm and Greg Saw looking in from behind the corner. Silva has been in the #1 slot since April 19.

After Shaw there's a small gap to a grouping of guys who seem to shift around a little every update. Of particular interest at the moment (for me), are Montreal's Kinzon Iwamoto and Nashville's Steve Clayton, who I'm following because of their nice little run ups during the post season. They seem to be settling back into the middle of the top pack

I also have to note that Boise's Doug Echoff is rising fast at #34 -- a guy I'm looking at because he literally could not get anyone out while in Bikini, but has become a standout since I traded him.

So we're at the END OF JUNE, and it's still Hector Silva's world. Corfield leads the rest of the pack, a bit of a distance behind--a pack with lots of similar names, but who keep jumbling around as starts are made and not made.

Charm Cities' Ranal Seldon is edging his way back up the charts, currently at #12. And look at Boise's Doug Eckhoff, a Bikini castoff who immediately found the right stuff after being sent to Boise. Ecjkhoff is sitting strong at #16. Following your own pitchers is fun, too. My own Sam Nebraska is slowly making his way up the charts. At #52 now, he seems to be climbing about 1.5-2 slots per week.

Of particular note of a pitcher not yet in the top 100: Phil Cole has begun to start again. At 330.8 points, he's at #174.

Big drop for San Fernando ace Arnold Cantrell. My manager took control of player strategy this season and is letting Cantrell throw 120 pitches while I'd cap him at 105 or so. Been seriously considering firing my manager midseason to get that control back.
