MBWBA Longest Playoff Drought

Post by JimBob2232 » Sun May 29, 2016 9:58 am

In 2043, Charm City snapped their 8 year playoff drought. Next up (behind beloved Des Moines of course!) is Montreal - who has missed the last 7 post seasons)

There are 30 teams in the BBA, and all of them (except 3 of the the 8 expansion teams) have made the Playoffs at one time or another. In this feature, we look at those with the longest drought.

2008 - Des Moines - The longest Drought in the league at 35 years. This had largely been a function of very dominant New Orleans and Indianapolis teams in the FL-MW, but has continued to this day. Des Moines has had 9 100+ loss seasons over this span. It looked like things were finally looking up for this franchise as they finished over .500 in 2030 for the first time since 2014. Des Moines has been very bad for very long.

2036 - Montreal
2037 - Madison
2038 - Seattle,
2039 - Phoenix
2040 - Jacksonville, Long Beach
2041 - Las Vegas, Vancouver, Calgary, Valencia, Nashville
2042 - Boise, Brooklyn, Mexico City, California, Omaha, Twin Cities
2043 - San Antonio, New Orleans, Rockville, Atlantic City, Edmonton,Yellow Springs, Chicago, Hawaii, Louisville, San Fernando

Never - Wichita, Charlotte, Portland

Record for longest playoff Drought (since tracked in 2032) -
35* - Des Moines (2008-Present)
16 - Havana (2017 - 2033)
14 - Valencia (2023-2037)
15 - Nashville (2025 - 2040)
11 - Hawaii (2027-2038)
10 - Chicago (2031 - 2042)

Nice feature. I feel like this points to some decent parity in the league. At least for playoff appearances. Different story when talking about Landis appearances/championships.

How quickly they forget.

YS9 played three extra games this year. :)

Unless I'm missing something, the past seven seasons have seen seven different Landis participants in each league. That data suggests the parity level of the MBWBA is pretty solid all around.

Absolutely agree with this. However there are still multiple clubs with no Landis championships, and even one or two that have no Landis appearances.

Fair point...I forgot about the Gegohan Round! Although 10/24 teams making the playoffs makes Des Moines and Tucon's streaks even more (ahem...) impressive.

That is true, of course. I'm actually a bigger proponent of smaller playoffs, but what do I know? :)

In a league with 24 teams, 10 playoff spots seems high. But I'm just a new guy so I also know nothing.

Is this where I should add in "You forgot to include YS9's consecutive Landis appearances in 2027 and 2028?"

Wow... how long is 19 seasons in real life years - 3? That is some impressive fortitude - plugging in and exporting ~500 times (every other day over 3 years) with no payoff.

Constricted playoffs breeds nothing but disinterest in online OOTP leagues. More teams "out of it" at the deadline. More teams "out of it" before the season even starts. Etc.
