Youngest Pitchers to 100 Wins

Post by JimBob2232 » Mon Feb 15, 2016 6:58 am

I was looking at Manuel Ramirez earler and was thinking "Who is the earliest to get to 100 wins"? So I did some research. Hope you like it. For ease of data mining, I used the "season the player got 100 Wins" metric. So there are some ties here that would require breaking. Also, I mostly used the all time wins list (Sprinkled with some of my own knowledge of league history), so if you know of another player who reached the milestone earlier...let me know and I will adjust.

1. Steve Nebraska (23) - There is no pitching record this guy doesnt own. Why should this be any different. Despite not entering the league until he was 20, the all time Wins leader reached 100 wins at the ripe old age of 23, his 4th season.

2T. Manuel Ramirez (26) - Second on the list is current Crawdad Manuel Ramirez, who reached the feat in the year he turned 26. But in those 7 seasons, he only has 3 all star game appearances.

2T. John Ross Riles (26) - Tied for 2nd, ripping off three straight 19+ win seasons in your early 20s gets you on this list.

4T. Micheal Strathallen (27) - Oh what could have been. A precipitous dropoff at the end of his career, there was few better at the beginning.

4T.Raymon Ayala(27) - Made his major league debut at 19, but took him a while to get rolling.. Longevity is the reason he is in the top 10 in all time wins. He only had one 20 win season, which came when he was 36

4T. Chip Foodie (27) - Almost made the 26 cut. Had 95 at the end of his 26 season.

4T. Robbie Seargent(27) - 2nd all time in MBWBA wins, but took him some time get going. Debuted at the age of 21, had a 20 win season at 22, and didnt look back. More consistent than anyone else (save Nebraska), his relatively late start (age 21) without a overwhemling domination early bumps him down the list.

4T. Chris Stoller (27) - Might have been much earlier if not for an injury in 2000 where he only mustered up 3 wins in 9 games. Still an impressive start for the youngster.

4T Billy Chapel (27)

4T Gabriel Campos(27)

Other Notables:
Mike Swanson (28) - Current Las Vegas Star came on quick with Buffalo, but didnt make his debut until age 22. Still impressive, early injuries (and maybe a league reset?) held him back.
Amen Mitrani(28) - Another buffalo star who turned it on in his late 20s
Davey Achenson(29) - 20 wins in his sophomore season, 19 the following year. Tailed off after that. Long career made him HOF worthy. Remained good pitcher into his 40s.

Bryan Walden (28)
Roy Nevel Jr(28)
Ron Burgundy (28)
Manny Bautista (28)
Mingo Boone(29)
Jay Lee(29) - Really turned it on in his 30s. Had 136 wins from age 30-36. Much too late for this award, but should give anyone pause who thinks players are done at age 30.
Jessie Wright (31) - Another late bloomer. But 50 wins in 2000/2001 (including 30 wins in 2000, which remains an MBWBA record) helped him out a ton.

Who did I miss???

Andy Messersmith was 34, but achieved 100 wins in just over 5 seasons...

"Fastest" or "Youngest"? It may just be me, but "fastest" makes me think of a guy getting to 100 wins in his first, say, 160 starts. Of course, I have no idea how that would be researched while retaining any sanity.

I was expecting the list to be heavily slanted towards the 4-man rotation era, but it looks like a nice spread across eras.

Ayala was my first ever draft pick when I joined the league with Long Beach back in 1995. I gave him a callup after being drafted in September and he posted 2 solid starts. So solid in fact I left him on the playoff roster for the Surfers that season. Not bad for a 19 year old. I can't recall his ratings but I'm sure he shouldn't have been pitching in the MBWBA at 19.
