Woooo-weeee! A new season is upon us and the league came out spry and energetic. You guys treated the opening sim like a virgin on prom night.... You couldn't wait to take the dress off and get down to business. Our first sim features 9 Ben Dover games including a few of you that just decided to swap action with another, you dirty, dirty dogs!! Let's get to the action, shall we!?
April 4
Brooklyn 11 - Huntsville 1
The league enjoyed the prom music for the first 3 days then the action started. Who better than to take the first Ben Dover loss than our defending Landis Champions in Huntsville? Has it ever happened where the defending champs took the first loss by 8+ runs of the season? How do I know? I just started this feature last season so we'll say, yes! Yes it is a first! Brian Whitten smacked his first homerun of the season in the contest and may have smacked Huntsville reliever Francisco Rodriguez on the ass rounding the bases. Rodriguez allowed 4 runs in an inning of relief with the big blow coming off the bat of Whitten, a 3-run shot in the 8th inning.
April 5
Atlantic City 11 - Indy 1
After capturing the inaugural Dickens Cider award in 2023, the Frick League has had enough of being bullied by Indy. Indy claimed 10 victories in this feature last season to lead the league but are the first Frick League to "go down" in 2024. Timmy Moulin "Rouge" (I made that up) had a couple of hits and 4 RBI to lead the Gamblers offensive run. Indy's attempt to transition Josh Rosser into a full time starter didn't start off so well as he was handed the Dover loss here by allowing 6 runs on 8 hits in just 2.2 innings.
April 6
Las Vegas 9 - Des Moines 0
Des Moines was in the hunt in 2023 Dover award but fell just short in the end as Hawaii was shafted a few times more. But the Kernals jump right back at it in 2024 and take their first Dover loss of the season. Cap Morgan's only start of the sim saw him exit with an ERA of 162.0 for the season as he allowed 6 runs on 6 hits and failed to get out of the first inning. He recorded just one out all the while watching Banuelos, Gonzaelz, and Carmona run the train on him with a homerun each in the 1st inning. Gonzalez and Carmona went back to back off Morgan.
April 7
Indy 9 - Atlantic City 1
The Grasshoppers return the favor to the Gamblers a few days after their previous meeting that saw the Gamblers take it to Indy. Doug Glover bookended 2 homeruns in the game, belting one in the opening frame and another one in the final inning. The final one came off of Jose Marroquin in the 9th inning. It not only put this loss into the Dover category but also handed Marroquin his first Ben Dover loss of the season by allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 1.2 innings.
April 8
Yellow Springs 10 - Louisville 2
So the Nine have this Baca guy, not sure if you've heard of him, but he hit 2 homeruns in this game which gave him 6 up to this point in the season already. It was his only 2 hits of the game and he drove in 3 RBI. Neither of his homeruns came off of Sluggers reliever Javier Trujillo though who allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in the 6th inning. He was brought on with 2 outs in the inning. When he left the game, there were still 2 outs in the inning.
April 9
Louisville 13 - Yellow Springs 5
Clearly offended and pissed off for being treated to a Ben Dover the day before, the Sluggers enacted some revenge on the Nine in this game. The top 6 hitters in the Sluggers lineup had at least 2 hits while 5 of the top 6 had 2 RBI each in the win. With the score 9-4, the Nine turned to Steve Gould to eat innings and keep the game out of Dover territory. Gould was clearly tight as he walked 4 batters and allowed 3 hits over 2 innings. That led to 4 Sluggers runs and put the game over the edge. Needless to say, Gould wasn't tight leaving the mound.
Carolina 17 - Tucson 4
Now THAT is how you treat someone in a Dover game. Just lay it on them hard and repeatedly. The Kraken scored all 17 runs in just 3 innings, scoring 5 runs in the 3rd and 9th innings and then adding a 7 spot in the 7th inning. Stu Baker had a field day, going 5 for 6 with 3 runs and 4 RBI. Two of the five hits were doubles, the rest were singles. The Dover award went to THIS GUY who allowed 3 runs on 3 hits in just 0.1 innings pitched. But the biggest question here is how in the fuck did we end up with two guys named Jose Marroquin and what are the odds both would get a Ben Dover Award in the same sim!!??
April 10
Yellow Springs 12 - Louisville 1
Come on boys, get your acts together. There are kids watching these games. Show some decency. Stu, I get. But Avery? Come on! Brad Welsh allowed 7 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks in 2.2 innings pitched to drop to 0-2 on the season. Manny Mendoza enjoyed the game a lot by going 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored and 5 RBI. Two of the hits were homeruns.
Tucson 11 - Carolina 2
Back at ya, Kraken. The Tucson take out some revenge on Carolina for yesterday's Dover action. Andre Wellington had a game for the ages that saw him go 3 for 3 with 3 homeruns and 8 RBI. In fact, it was such a good game, the rest of the Cactus just stood back and watched as Wellington singled handedly issued a few Kraken pitchers some Ben Dover action. But none received worse treatment than Enea Ginori. Ginori served up 2 of Wellington's homeruns, including a grand slam in the first inning. When Enea exited the game, he had allowed 7 runs on 6 hits (2 homeruns) in just 3 innings of work.
