Bumps & Lumps 1995 - 1

Post by Fat Nige » Mon May 03, 2010 1:11 pm

We’re six weeks into the 1995 season and already we have 14 players around the MBBA that are looking to be out for at least two months with close to 10 of them likely to miss the rest of the regular season.

Las Vegas pitcher Frank Siminara is the longest out, although his 1995 record is only 1-4 with a 4.81 ERA I’m sure the Hustlers will miss him as he sits out 13-14 months with a torn rotator cuff. Also missing from MBBA rotations is Madison’s Teddy Higuera (3-1 in five starts with a 3.86 ERA), his torn back muscle will probably keep him out until the playoffs if Wolves good form continues and Vancouver’s Niles Renfork who compiled a 2-3 record in his seven starts with a 5.68 ERA. But now will sit out most of the rest of 1995 after having elbow surgery.
In the MBBA bullpens California will miss Kevin Mee (1-1, 1SV, 2.50 ERA) who is not expected back in 1995 following a ruptured disc in his back whilst Steve Ontiveros of the Montreal Blazers tore an elbow ligament to end his season after just two innings pitched in 1995.
Hackensack Bulls will be cursing after star third baseman Rashardo Menne Jr tore ankle ligaments and will miss the rest of the season after hitting 2 HR, 16 RBI and 37 hits at an avg of .316. With yet another elbow injury, Calgary’s 36 year old first baseman Nate Jirlbert will miss six months after just nine appearances. Phoenix also can wave goodbye to catcher Theo Epstein who fractured his ankle and Gerry Fray of Hawaii will miss 8-9 weeks after he broke his hand in his first appearance of 1995.
Buffalo fans were looking forward to seeing Oscar Vizcaino, an off season acquisition from New Orleans but just 24 games into his new career he suffered a herniated disc and will spend most of 1995 on the DL.
The most affected club so far though has been Omaha who started 1995 with second baseman Kevin Greene and pitcher Trey Anastasio already not expected to make their season debuts till the very end of 1995 and have now added 1st baseman Justin Smith to the DL with a broken hand as well as shortstop Pat Listach who will be out until Christmas with a torn labrum.
With the majority of these serious injuries happening to players past their 30th birthday you have to wonder whether the older generation of MBBA players are pushing themselves too hard to keep ahead of the younger guys pushing hard for their jobs. Look hard at these names because perhaps some of them might call it a day instead of battling back.
