2058 – SP Ranking Thread

What we have here is your classic "Bob Anderson making a run on Hector Silva" gambit. In fact, with Anderson starting again in a day, there's a reason to think he might just wrest the #1 crown from Silva's hands. That will be interesting to see, as Silva has been top dog since April 9th, when Dave Corefield stole the spotlight for one day.

Montreal's Iwamoto is stepping up again. Louisville's Greg Shaw has slid a bit, and Vancouver's Steve Warren is nipping at his heels to get into the top 10. The names Cantrell, Kawao, Hasegawa, and Lindsay are no strangers to this list. The Crawdad's Micha Harrington seems to me that he's over-performing a bit, but I suppose the only thing that matters is that he's consistently good. Mexico City's stalwart ace Dave Corefield seems to have settled into the 8-10 spot for now.

Off that page, Phil Cole is now at #126 as he works his way back from his injury.

Four guys in the top 55 and all five starters in the top 92 now that Morgan Tomsett is on the list. Pretty sweet considering my home ballpark although the Pacific as a division probably offsets the ballpark.

Too bad I'm not currently cashing in on that with a playoff spot!

I like to process this list a little differently. Since there are 32 teams in the league....

1-32 is a number one starter
33-64 is a number 2 starter
65-96 is a number 3 starter

So using Twin Cities....
Stuart(9) is a top third #1 Starter
Takuda(21) is a mid to bottom third #1 Starter
Crutcher(54) and Stone(59) are bottom third #2 Starters

That's kinda how I view them too. Stuart as an ace, Takuda as a really good #2 while Crutcher and Stone are both solid number 3's. This ranking has them all a bit higher than I thought, but not too much.

That's certainly a reasonable way to think of it. I was debating making the list 128 slots big at one point just to give the full range of #4s.

At some point I should do some studies on churn rates. By that I mean how often do players move from one segment to another. I'm guessing that now that we're getting enough time to be stable, that the top 16 and top 32 stays moderately stable, but that as we go down the chain you see more and more churn.

After the trade deadline I now have 5 starters in the top 100, 4 in the top 51, and 3 in the top 32.

If I can get to the playoffs, I feel really good about the rotation I’ll be sending out there. But I’ve got my work cut out for me to get there.

Since this is the end of the season, I'll post the entire list of ranked SP (guys with over 300 points).

Bottom line: Hector Silva is back to the top of the table, with Bob Andersson close behind. Hasegawa, Corfield, and Stuart are all within ten points of each other, then we get to Kawano, Iwamoto, and Harrington in a 4-point clump. If you believe this table has merits, you can see why Charlotte's trades for Fleming and Marroquin had to be made. Louisville's Greg Shaw has faded along with the Sluggers themselves.

Scanning down the list can show a few more interesting bits. The Phil Cole watch has him up into the top 100 again. The Sacramento rotation still scores highly, but seems to be slipping overall. Alaric Wullenweber is still in the 30s. Barely. Boise's Doug Eckhoff, after a sizzling front half of the season his cooled down a touch. Do your own scans of course. It's fun.
