Game Recap

Offense was in short supply in this one as the Madison Wolves eked out a win against their Upper Midwest rivals, the Twin Cities River Monsters, by a score of 2-1. With the victory, Madison keep their postseason hopes alive as they improve their record to 37-28. They are currently third in the Heartland. The loss puts the River Monsters' record at 22-44, three and a half games ahead of last place Des Moines in the division standings.

With Madison star outfielder Manobu Shimizu going 0-4, the Wolves had to look elsewhere for offensive production tonight. Third baseman and on-base machine Salvador Allende answered the call. The Madison lead-off man had three hits (including a triple to start the game that set up a Chris Mann sacrifice fly) and a walk in four plate appearances. Unfortunately for Wolves fans, Madison hitters could not bring him home the next three times he got on base. The winning run would come across when José Hernández hit a ground ball double that would score the late-blooming Jesús Yan from second base in the top half of the fifth.

The River Monsters would make things interesting in the bottom of the sixth inning when Elijah Campos walked the first two batters he faced. Twin Cities third baseman Vasco Fonzarelli would hit a line drive double of the center field wall that would score one run, and that would be the end of Campos's night. Madison reliever Todd Stone [the real player of the game, if you ask me] would inherit two runners in scoring position, but would coolly retire the next three batters to end the Twin Cities scoring threat and preserve the win for the visiting team.

Madison starter Campos (5 IP, 1 K, 3 BB, 3 H, 1 ER) did just enough for his club, was credited with the win, and was named player of the game. Twin Cities starter Pat Sloan (6 IP, 1 K, 1 BB, 4 H, 2 ER) had a comparable game on the mound, but was let down by his offense and would take the loss.

Both these teams are right about where we thought they'd be. The Twin Cities, light on talent, are dueling Des Moines in the Félix Ramos sweepstakes, and are losing, which is to say they are failing to maneuver themselves into the #1 spot in next year's draft. While it looks like the Heartland Division crown may already be out of reach as white hot Nashville continues to build on their lead, Madison is in the thick of the playoff hunt. They currently sit in third place in the wild card standings, three games ahead of fourth place Louisville.
