Draft Compensation

Post by mad0die » Wed Jun 02, 2010 1:05 pm

If this is going to be a lower activity league with semi-regular turnover, maybe we should scrap draft pick trading and go with in-game draft pick compensation instead. It would be better for the FA classes and the league overall and eliminate someone coming in and destroying their future and they leaving.

Interesting proposal, and I really have no problem with that...it should make free agency interesting. Frankly, the current setup hurts bad teams more than helps it. If you want to do it, stick up a poll.

I still havent embraced the "low activity high turnover" idea yet.

I haven't embraced it either, but I do think his suggestion has merit regardless.

I'm actually not a fan of draft pick trading anyways...so, I'm on board. After the upcoming draft, no more pick trading?

I don't think anyone has dealt a pick from next years, so let's do it.

I think this adds more to the league than draft pick trading does. MBBA didn't have draft pick trading when it started either. :)

That is very true.....my two stipulations were NO DH and NO PICK TRADING. Don't remember when the latter caved in.

Love the idea of no draft pick trading... honestly I think this is a major step towards balancing the go for it now at all cost vs. super tank rebuild strategy. And, IMO, the more competitive balance you have in a league the more fun the league - especially in one which is a lower participation league.

And as Joel pointed out, compensation adds more to the league than draft pick trading.

What's the difference? The problem I have with this is I'm not entirely certain what kind of compensation we'd use; wouldn't it be the usual Type A/Type B free agent type plays? Because this penalizes the middle teams more than the higher ones or the lower ones; the higher teams don't need to sign high-level free agents or already have them; the lower teams won't bother signing anyone good and will continue rebuilding through the draft. But Type A/Type B free agents shift power to the rich teams by giving them extra first round picks AND sandwich picks, which seems unnecessarily potent for a NEW league.

The lower teams can sign the Type A/Type B free agents and not necessarily lose their pick. I forget the cut off, I think it is either the top 5 or top 10 range if you sign a Type A, you won't lose your pick.

It's the first half. Teams 1-12 won't lose a pick.
