Bring back a player from CEI

All of you I am sure know what has happened to Erik Bjornstad, as he cracked his skull in a collision at home plate. But that has not stopped me from thinking. From what, you may ask? Well I think that it is not right for us to not be able to do something about a CEI. How many times do you hear about CEI's taking the careers of ML players in the MLB? Never. There are few and they rarely happen to the pros. The fact is, the pros are paid, and rarely does one get hurt badly enough to where he cant play after rehabbing for some time. The only ML player I know of that was talented that had a CEI would be Albert Belle, and it could be argued that he could have come back from it had he rehabbed or wanted to rehab from it.

I am not here just to argue the fact that they don't happen, we cant change the OOTP code. CEI's will always be a part of the game. BUT, they shouldnt be able to do so as much as they are. So, I am hereby suggesting that we input a system via PP that would be able to bring them back from the dead. I am going to put forth a proposal in which the amount of PP it would take to get your player back would depend on how good the said player would be. So for instance, if he is a 30 year old stud 2B like Channel Cat was, he would cost more then a 21 yr. old 3* prospect. Here is what I was thinking of.

2.5-5* Gold - 75 PP
1-2* Gold - 35 PP
4-5* Blue - 75 PP
1-3.5* Blue - 25 PP

I think this is only fair as this isnt football where CEI's happen a lot. Baseball, especially a young player, shouldnt get CEI's. And for the same injury to another player that is only out one season there is severe flaws in OOTP's injury algorithms. A split open skull should not land you out of your career at the age of 30. This would be a good way to have to pay for your star to get healed and I dont know, maybe there could be a rehab period where they come back after a year and a half alas Robbie Nen?

Also, I am nowhere near set in stone on those PP needed to get a player fixed, that's just what came to mind, could be more or less.

What does everyone think about this. And I don't just want this put in because of Bjornstad's occurance, its the right thing to do.

I think this is an interesting suggestion. I'd like to hear what others think.

Just a little investigation on my part. Career ending injuries in the MBBA in 1995:

MLB: AUS 2B Eric Bjornstad, 2.5* Starter
AAA: None
AA: MAD RF Kagegasa Imou, 5* outfield prospect
A: OMA LF William Nester, 0.5* outfield prospect

So, out of around 2400 players in four levels of professional baseball, we're looking at 3 CEI's. Speaking as the person who got hosed the most by a CEI this season, that doesn't seem unreasonable.

I am willing to bet that there are at least three players on all of baseball each year who get an injury and never play again. It's just not as obvious, because they talk about rehabbing and trying to get back. But I can offer you a few other MLB's with CEIs: Jeff Bagwell, Dave Dravecky, Tony Saunders, and those are just off the top of my head. I'm betting there are more.

Agreed, for every Bagwell, there is a Dickie Thon or a Paul Wilson, a guy who gets a CEI and still manages to return a year or two later to have a career, although much below their original trajectory.

The one issue I do have with the CEI's is that they are all because of "Post Concussion Syndrome" - couldn't they be a bit more original than that? And really, baseball of all sports would be the one you COULD come back from with PCS, just ask the above Dickie Thon.

All of their player bios are dated 9/1/1995 - may have something to do with them retiring and going into the history files.

I think this is a great idea. Big question is, why did it take so long for someone to come up with it?

No kidding. Get it going now, and you'll see me write like a banshee until the end of the season so I can get however many points it takes to resurrect Imou.

Also, while I'm thinking about it. I think there should be some sort of minimum time limit after which you could bring a guy back. Perhaps they would have to sit out the rest of the season in which they got hurt and another full season as well.

Wow, that seems like a small price to pay for bringing back a stud too!

If we are only dealing with 3 CEIs all season, I am not sure its really worth fixing. And i dont think its that unreasonable. For every guy you have heard of getting a real life CEI, there are 4-5 times as many in the minor leagues. think guys like Brien Taylor.

etc. etc.

I say live with it, its part of the game...although i wish it seemed to happen more to older players.

And as far as career ending concussions go...

I don't know - I like the randomness of losing a guy to a CEI...I don't think we should be able to bring them back.

Thats my 2 cents

Its a tough issue and a well thought-out remedy. But it might open a bit of a Pandora's box on where you draw the line.

For example, in another league I just lost my #1 pitching prospect for good, not initially but after a setback:
10-30-2011 Injured (partially torn labrum), out for 3-4 months.
01-24-2012 Injury setbacks result in end of career
Goodbye 23 year old stud pitcher. We'd have to consider if this proposal also covers this scenario.
