Converted Coaches

Post by shoeless.db » Sun May 04, 2025 7:27 am

Upon a player’s retirement, only the top team the player played with in terms of games played has the ability to convert that player to a coach during the first offseason.

The game is about immersion. Franchise players should have a chance to stay with their top franchise. It shouldn’t be a race.

Call it the Felipe Vega rule.

(Not bitter at Jim. There was no rule and Vega was a great coach choice. That was just good GM’ing on his part.)

I would suggest expanding it to ANY team played for during the course of a player's career.

I like the idea of an old veteran on a team at the end of a long career, then transitioning into being a coach with that team. That would also make a good story, while still preventing some random team grabbing up, say, Felix Roman for instance, just because they can. Which reminds me, I do need a minor league hitting coach...

I do agree with this except it still makes it a race between two teams, which is what I'm trying to avoid. For simplicity sake, the most games played is a easy rule to follow.

I go with original team or longest tenured team. It would be nice to ask otherwise.

Sure, but... that would mean Felix Roman can't be a coach for Boise. Or Tony Frost couldn't have become a coach for Vancouver as he currently is. It's just a bit too restrictive of situations that actually would make sense in real life.

We can at least follow common decency and reach out to other GMs in the cases of players who spent substantial time with more than one organization.

Unless it's my own player, I typically give it a season or two. If no one takes them by then, I figure they're free game. I agree with asking, and would prefer that to legislating it out. But no strong feelings.

I dont have a strong objection to this. But I do think at times there are other reasons for a coaching hire. Jared Gilstrom is a good one for me. Yes, he only played two seasons in New Orleans, and spent most of his career in Montreal and San Fernando (about even), but when he retired, I grabbed him up. Partly because he is Gillstrom, but also a big selling point was that New Orleans is his hometown. Takes some of that storyline away if he was only able to sign with SFB or MON.

Mostly I'd just say that if someone feels they might be encroaching on a player, maybe chat with the other GMs before offering.
