Chris Kelly Lost for Season
Chris Kelly of the Pikemen just might have to call it quits for the season. The 33-year-old Rockville starting pitcher received a possible season-ending injury against the Atlantic City Gamblers recently at Owen's Ordinary. Kelly suffered a damaged elbow ligament while throwing a pitch. The Pikemen medical staff said he could be out quite some time, as much as 14 months.

Over the season Kelly has thrown 133.1 innings and dished out 135 strikeouts with a 9-5 mark and a 4.12 ERA.

Valencia Stars Mathematically Out of Playoffs
After spending most of the season well back of the division leaders, the Valencia Stars made it official today, becoming mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.

Valencia last appeared in the postseason in 2041. This is their 4th consecutive year missing the playoffs, and in total they have not advanced past the regular season 36 times in their 50-year history. In the last 10 seasons, the Stars have missed the playoffs 8 times.

Flores Injured During Circuit Training Routine
Francisco Flores of the Robins was injured while going through his normal training routine today. While the injury itself is undisclosed, Flores will miss "a couple of days, at most" according to his manager Tomás Valdéz. "It wasn't pretty. He's more or less fine, but this should serve as an important safety lesson for the rest of the clubhouse."

[Problems Continue For García and Cruz, Trade On The Way?
Earlier in the season, when the Kernels's Juan García and Luis Cruz had a scuffle in the dugout that was captured by the cameras, they brushed it off and commented that they were still a "good" team. Now, several weeks later, the Kernels are 49-83 and appear to be going nowhere. Manager Trey Williams has hinted that a move might be in the works to separate the clashing stars.

"Look, they both have a lot of talent, but their personalities don't mesh too well. Who knows, maybe they'd be better off in opposite dugouts," Williams said.

While there's no guarantee a move will be made, one has to assume that some action will be taken by the team soon.

Is Controversial Right Fielder Secretly a Softie?
File this story under "whoda' thunk it?" Vancouver Mounties's right fielder Jeffrey Smith is seen by some as being aloof and a bit of a loner. "I'd call him 'intense,'" teammate Wilson Ford put it judiciously. Smith's reputation isn't helped by his sometimes contentious relationship with the media, and most reporters would agree that he's not the easiest player to interview, let alone get to know. If he'd agree to talk with you, Smith would probably explain that he puts all of his effort into his peformance on the field, and that he's focused on winning a championship, not a popularity contest.

So everybody agrees that Smith is, as the old-timers would say, a "tough egg." But maybe he isn't as hard-boiled as most folks might think. An inside source recently reported that Smith has been volunteering his time at the Childrens' Memorial Hospital in Vancouver. When initially confronted with the story, Smith angrily denied it, but his teammates were unanimous in support of his generous and, frankly, unexpected gesture. "It shows what we always suspected, that his heart is in the right place," said Ford. "He really cares about kids, and that's what counts in the end."

Does this signal the emergence of a kinder, gentler Smith? Maybe, maybe not. But don't be surprised if you see him a get a few more high-fives from his fellow Vancouver players and perhaps a few more autograph requests from some of the kids who benefitted from his previously secret generosity.

Lumberjacks Out of Time, Out of Playoffs
The baseball world has known for a long time that the Portland Lumberjacks were not destined for the playoffs this year. But now it is official, as the team was mathematically eliminated from postseason contention today.

This is the 6th time in a row that the Lumberjacks have missed the playoffs.They have yet to make the playoffs in their history.

El Paso Chilis Mathematically Out of Playoffs
It has been a woeful season for the El Paso Chilis and now they have been officially eliminated from playoff contention.

"You always need some things to break your way to get into the playoffs," said manager Rushd Ercan. "And nothing broke our way this year."

The Chilis have missed the playoffs 10 times in their 10 years as a Brewster Baseball Association franchise. This playoff miss is the club's 11th in a row, with their last postseason appearance coming in 2033.

204 Strikeouts by Kartosuwiryo Sets New Mark
There's a new all-time strikeout king in the league. Susila Kartosuwiryo of the Manama Pearls chalked up his 204th K for the year to establish a new single-season mark. He broke the old record, which was held by Aurelio Fernández. After firing the historic record-shattering pitch, all bedlam broke loose and Susila Kartosuwiryo was showered with a long, standing ovation by the Manama Fields fans. Speaking with reporters after the game, Kartosuwiryo stated his pitching philosophy, "If you can get an out on one pitch, take it. Let the strikeouts come on the outstanding pitches. Winning is the big thing. If you throw a lot of pitches, before you know it, your arm is gone."

This season Kartosuwiryo has fanned 204 in 178.2 innings and collected a 18-3 record with a 3.07 ERA.

Kings Mathematically Eliminated from Playoffs
With games left to play, the Baghdad no longer have anything to play for except for pride and their fans.

With their record of 57-81, they have mathematically been eliminated from making the playoffs this year.

Baghdad Kings manager, Tomas Toledo, says that pride is more than enough.

"We are going to win every game we possibly can. That's a promise."

Things haven't been going too well for the Baghdad Kings this season and now mathematics is against them as well. The club has been officially eliminated from postseason contention.
