Interesting Chart of the Night: Time of Play

Post by RonCo » Wed Jul 29, 2020 11:29 pm

Probably not surprising, but the pace of play of our BBA game is not particularly brisk. Our average games are 3 hours and 21 minutes long.

Here are the game times for all teams by home and away. I think the most interesting thing about this is that the better teams play shorter games at home as best as I can tell. I suppose I could cross-index this with winning percentage.

So, yeah, I went ahead and put each of our team's winning percentages up against the ratio of each team's Home Game Times divided by Away Game times. It turns out that ratio is fairly strongly correlated.

Better teams don't have to play the bottom of the 9th at home, which shaves a few minutes.

Right.

This suggests the game does allocate time in what I'll call "realistic" ways...though I have no baseline for what should be eal.

Ron, can your script tease out the longest and shortest individual games of the year? Just curious ...

The quickest game of the year so far was held August 9th. I note it included only seven strikeouts and one walk. Both Mahoney and Geestman threw complete games in under 100 pitches. It took two hours and 18 minutes.

The longest game in the season was May 30 when Nashville and Long Beach played for six hours and 11 minutes. It was a 17 inning affair that the Surfers won by a score of 9-8. Long Beach pitchers threw 246 pitches. Nashville pitchers threw 253.
