A Look-see on Lucas McNeill's MLB Similarity Scores

Post by RonCo » Sat Apr 11, 2020 8:27 pm

Here's an interesting comparison...after looking at the thread where I dumped the similarity tool I referenced earlier today, I followed Fred's example and took Lucas McNeill's current stats and threw them into the mix as both second base and first ...

Here's 1B:
NamePOSEndYrSimilarity
Jeff Bagwell1B2005878.2
Todd Helton1B2013844.2
Frank Thomas1B2008820.4
Miguel Cabrera1B2018814.6
Fred McGriff1B2004808.9
Carlos BeltranOF2017798.0
Andres Galarraga1B2004797.1
Bobby AbreuOF2014794.8
Billy WilliamsOF1976792.6
Dwight EvansOF1991788.6

Here's 2B:

NamePOSEndYrSimilarity
Jeff Kent2B2008828.2
Chipper Jones3B2012807.0
Jeff Bagwell1B2005758.2
Eddie Mathews3B1968757.7
Robinson Cano2B2018750.8
Carlos BeltranOF2017750.0
Bobby AbreuOF2014746.8
Billy WilliamsOF1976744.6
Dwight EvansOF1991740.6
Mike Schmidt3B1989739.4

This is a fun little list. THe first thing to note, of course, is that the similarity numbers are not that close. OOTP and the BBA have a very different envirnoment than the MLB world. But, still...

The five guys on both lists:
  • Jeff Bagwell
  • Carlos Beltran
  • Bobby Abreu
  • Billy Williams
  • Dwight Evans
The five guys who swap out depending on position (1B > 2B)
  • Todd Helton > Jeff Kent
  • Frank Thomas > Chipper Jones
  • Miguel Cabrera > Eddie Mathews
  • Fred McGriff > Robinson Cano
  • Andres Galaraga > Mike Schmidt
Lots of great names, eh?

Of course, McNeill isn't done yet, so we'll see what happens as he moves on...

How similarity scores work, for those unfamiliar, or curious about how it's computed.
