Steam vs Direct Purchase?
Getting ready to buy ootp21...but im confused...is there any benefit to buying through steam? I never used steam before, so im curious.
If somehow i could access the game on my ipad, that would be a game changer....can I do that with steam?
I'll keep doing research, but thought id post here as well.
Thanks!

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
Steam is just easier for people who own a lot of games or people who like the automatic updates on their games. Steam is a marketplace for games, but it's also a one stop shop for all of your games on your computer. Instead of hunting for that one icon for the game you want to play, you can open steam, click on the name of the game and launch and steam will go get it for you to play. It also automatically updates your games whenever a hotfix or general update comes out from the dev.

Just to answer your question though, Steam cannot push games to your iPad or your microwave.

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
So with steam, is the game installed on my pc?
The autoupdate feature is nice (at least it seems like it would be)

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
I think all the downsides would be related to the marketplace. If you're not interested in purchasing additional games than it wouldn't impact you too much. I love Steam though, so I'm probably not the best person to come up with criticisms. You wont have any issues purchasing OOTP on there though. I used to purchase OOTP DRM free years ago. It was cool in some ways, but I like the Steam management of downloads better. However, the bigger benefit is just holding all of my games.

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
I'm not a gamer but I got into Football Manager three years ago and decided to purchase it via Steam for my first non-OOTP computer gaming experience since Miss Brown's third grade class and Oregon Trail.
The platform and gameplay were great but I only have a laptop, so after playing Football Manager for about 45 minutes, I could fry an egg on my keypad. I've heard other laptoppers say the same thing that Steam really makes your CPU work overtime.
Just food for thought from a gaming noob. (Mmmm, fried egg.)

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
One other benefit to Steam: if you buy one copy of a game, you can access it from any of your computers (that have steam installed on them). I have it on my desktop PC, a PC laptop, and an old Mac that I sometimes use upstairs. Three computers, but just 1 purchase of the game. That, along with the auto-updating, makes it a nice option for me, anyway. Plus I have a bunch of other games with similar multi-computer access ...

Any performance issues when you use the laptop (per my previous experience)?HoosierVic wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 7:13 pmOne other benefit to Steam: if you buy one copy of a game, you can access it from any of your computers (that have steam installed on them). Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
None, but it’s a new gaming laptop, so it runs everything pretty well …
Addendum - to specifically answer Joe's question - no heat or performance issues.

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
While most have already answered your questions, I highly prefer steam due to the automatic updates. That's probably the biggest selling point for me.
And it keeps FHM and OOTP within easy reach to jump from one to the other.

I use Steam as well. I personally like having access to the workshop, and it keeps my games all in one place without having to worry about physical discs and the like.

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
Steam is just like a storage box for your games, it can’t make them do something they can’t do normally. Hence as ootp can’t play on the IPad, Steam can’t rewrite the game and make it play there. One drawback sometimes is the auto update, nice as it is, there are times when Steam aren’t too quick at updating it and while all the manual updates have done it and are ready to export on the correct version, Steam makes you wait until they’re ready to update and you can’t manually updateJimBob2232 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 6:46 pmHa. Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
i do not use steam, but based on observations from being in this league awhile it seems like it can also be 2-3 days behind on some updates, so while it does install them automatically it does not install them as quickly as you can with a "normal" download.

Re: Steam vs Direct Purchase?
I had always done direct until the eSellerate store transition coupled with a PC issue screwed me last season. OOTP support was going to take more than 2 weeks to resolve my issue (not ideal at the rate we move), so I picked up a second copy on Steam. I harbor no ill will towards OOTP for the eSellerate thing but I will be buying from Steam going forward just for the added peace of mind that if I have an issue it can be resolved in a timely fashion.
