I specifically entered those offers so that the vesting criteria would be obtainable. I could have gone with 33 GS, but didn't want there to be any question about the legitimacy of my approach.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with these contracts. If you don't want people using vesting options, ban vesting options.

I dont really see the issue with 32 GS as a vesting option, certainly much better than 750 PA. That being said, I would not at all be surprised to see both guys start 31 games in the year before the option vests.

The 32 starts is reasonable but it certainly favors the team in a major way. Just put them in the bullpen for about a month and your out of the contract. I don’t like vesting options for this reason. Its basically making a team option with no buyout because the vesting is so easy for the team to win and manipulate to their favor. With that being said it’s allowed so Shaw was within his rights. If this was real life and he had an agent he would be negotiating the team to about 23-25 starts so the vesting would be more equal to both parties. Unfortunately the game don’t understand we are ruthless and outsmarting it. But everyone seems to likes vesting options do not much we can do. But placing guidelines in place to make vesting options closer to 50/50 for team vs player seems to be a good compromise.

I do, however, think that vesting options that don't vest shouldn't qualify for comp picks, especially the way most of the GMs in the league seem to use them. They mostly seem to be no buyout TOs that can potentially net a comp pick.

I don't think any of Louisville's vesting options swayed the decision to sign. The guaranteed cash alone is large.

As the team that had both Amaral and Behner last year, I can tell you that I see no problem with the contracts. They were well over twice the money I would have offered.

It takes guts to offer that much money. Very easy to get burned (LaLoosh, cough). If LOU has the cash to spend, let him spend it!
