Happy to see the Italian and Pineda made the ROY ballots. Odd that Aaron Stone did not make the catcher Puckett list.

Ouch...that's an oversight as I would have voted for him for sure. Ideally, catchers would have a lower PA threshold to make the ballot.

Same for Hedde Veenman. Not that he was better than Stone but was probably ballot worthy.

Soooo, Zuniga tops French in nearly every single offensive category, yet French has TWICE the first place votes Zuniga does?! Uh, whaat? Both had a .410 OBP, Zuniga winds up with 104 extra base hits, and smashes French in SLG, OPS, wOBA, and wRC+. Counting stats more your thing? Well, Zuniga had 200+ hits, 45+ 2B, 55+ HR, 125+ RBI and 115+ R!! Basically, French hit for a higher average, stole 30+ bases (very inefficiently I might add), and played a slightly above average center field.

Zuniga put up the 5th highest slugging % in the 70+ year history of the BBA, the highest slugging % in 36 years! His OPS is 10th best in league history, just 0.005 behind Fernando Moreno's amazing 2031 season and the 2nd best OPS in 34 years. He was 0.001 away from a top 20 wOBA season in BBA history. And it isn't like he hit for all that power while hitting .270 or anything. Zuniga finished 4th in the entire BBA with a .352 average and over 200 hits.

Arguably one of the 5 best seasons a hitter has had in the past THIRTY YEARS (behind Gillstrom '30 & '31, Moreno '31, Escobar '29) and he's going to lose the Silk in a landslide?

After voting, I like to look at the results to see how well I did. I was a solid B student this year.

The Zuniga/French voting is interesting because it can be seen as answering the question of whether the award is about offensive prowess or overall value. On a raw plate appearance basis, Zuniga wins (his wRC+ of 185 is, as Tyler says, amazing), but French's 165 is also blisteringly good and his defense is just enough above average that he wins the WAR game by a score of 8.3 to 7.4.

Norm McConnell/Curt Phillips for FL Egan is another interesting one. Phillips is arguably head and shoulders stronger by FIP/ERA/BABIP/(K/BB), but McConnell has the saves (41-36)...so one can argue that VODAK's presence on the roster cost Phillips so strongly that not only did he lose to McConnell, both NSH's Ata and TWC's Woodside out-scored him in the voting.

Also brings into question whether Zuniga was more valuable on a playoff team than French on a sub-70 win team.

I usually vote by WAR on these types of awards and my French homerism really made it easy. If it was any other player on a non-playoff team, I'd probably flip the votes and give the nod to Zuniga with the WAR leader receiving 2nd place.

I actually brought up this scenario near the end (or maybe after the recording) of a Frontier Roundup with Brett and Fred, asking "Do you guys factor in intangibles into your votes, like feel-good-stories, impact towards making playoffs, etc.?"

I was interested to see how voting was going to break on my two pitchers - Ramos and Valle. I honestly wasn't sure how to vote between them...not to mention the Gracia/Sanchez/Tchekanov/Lima gang in there.

Forgive me if this is called out somewhere, couldn't find it. Are UMEBA Gm's suppose to vote for BBA?

It was a good conversation. I like to think I start with the numbers, then adjust for the stories. I figure these things are for who had the best season, which is sometimes the same and sometimes different than who had the best numbers.

I think if this in light of things like Andre Dawson's MVP season. Whiie his numbers were very good, I'm not sure they were really the best. But lay the story of his season over the top of it, and you've got something that makes the game special.

Well I appreciate the votes for GM of the year. Definitely don’t deserve the first place votes though.
