I'm likely drafting based on names, mustaches and cities/countries of origin...anything that could be used as future team news fodder.
I've done this with later picks.

Drafted J.R. Spoonman one draft just because I wanted to make a Team News about his unique last name.

The number 1 thing about this league is our awesome history. A sure fire way to destroy chunks of that history is draft “power creep”.

It's just that I don't see five batters that are usable. At all.

I see at most two dozen pitchers who are.

It's not a matter of blues or yellows or greens - I know the center of these things has changed and I'm happy to change with it, but this cupboard is BARE.

How do you mean?

Not to be aggressive here, and I know I've only been around since 2025, but it looks like we've had waves of big draft classes and crappy draft classes in the past. I get people might have more or less fun in one environment or the other, but our history seems to be our history either way. I don't see a lack of super-great players to enjoy ever being a problem--but maybe I'm wrong?

Yeah, they look ugly.

On the other hand, to be "that guy" again ... as a guy who drafts for position and playing time, and who plays the development game at its core as I manage my kids, I enjoy the chess-like aspect of this kind of class.

This class is more akin to Monopoly than chess...first few times passing Go is great and all, but eventually everyone is fighting over Baltic Ave. Ultimately, in a pissed off rage, the guy with the wheelbarrow token flips the board in disgust and yells at Grandma for hoarding the railroads, causing everyone to quit the game.

Oh, that's just my childhood? Carry on then...

But instead of B & O, the whole draft class just has BO.

By power creep I mean talent inflation gets higher and higher with each successive generation. Pretty soon you start seeing guys with 14 con and 15 power and goofy things like that. Hell we already have too many guys above 10.

Then your leaderboards become flooded with more and more recent players. And the guys before them become lost history essentially.

Ok. That makes sense.

We won't see that kind of "run to the top" on our ratings.

Exactly. This draft looks to me like the game is functioning correctly and not letting the draft spiral into an out of control freight train.

And besides, all these kids will have different ratings after spending some time in the minors anyway.

I'm interested to see where this class falls historically when we look back in 10-20 years. It often seems like all our projections are completely wrong when we first look at things in OOTP and the BBA. Hell, this class will likely rival 2016 for WAR.*

For the couple decades I've been in the OOTP environment, I've seen pretty much everyone talk like OOTP versions have specific slants. Of course, the "fun" thing is that different groups will sometimes say different things.

But the fact is that--as Brett notes--the way OOTP player creation and development works has always been, and will continue to be, dependent upon the settings and situation in each league. As a GM, that means tactics around player development and whatnot that work in one league may not work at all in another league. It also means that GMs need to be able to adapt to changing environments in the league they are in. (I think it was Jim who wrote a great post a season or two back about how he failed to make an adjustment, and hence New Orleans had to take a step back while he retooled).

A bad, relatively speaking, draft class isn’t a bad thing. People will emerge and it definitely gives pause to teams thinking about tanking and teams who always let guys walk and take the comp picks all the time.

But is the right way to counter that by creating a draft where no position player can play, and there are three potentially viable starting pitchers? Shouldn't it be countering it with a whole bunch of 6 contact players and fourth starters?

By the way, having gotten home and loaded up the game, I notice that Statsplus doesn't match the draft pool in game.

It's still not a very inspiring draft pool but it's a lot better than it shows on Statsplus. We might be able to get through a first round. We've had equally bad drafts before.

I think the degree to which the class lacks top end is more about what Ron was talking about with guys being eligible too soon.

Take last years pool and it to this years and divide by 2. I think you get the step in the right direction we needed and some top end guys would still be in there this year.
