Gervasio Ridder Release Money?
When I try to release Gervasio Ridder it says the remaining $56,000,000 will be spread out over 4 seasons.
His remaining contract looks like this:
2040--$16,000,000
2041--19,000,000 vesting option
2042--21,000,000 vesting option
Wouldn't he only be owed the $16,000,000 because obviously his 2041 and 2042 aren't going to vest if he isn't on the team?

You aren't giving him the option to vest so I'd assume that is why you owe him that money. And the 4 seasons part is probably just including 2039 since we are still technically in that season.

Maybe try to waive him first and leave him unprotected in the expansion draft? (or get in touch with Wilson and give him something so he'll take him in expansion?)

Well, that's kind of dumb. I don't think thats how real MLB contracts work is it? If you release someone, obviously they don't vest so the money is not guaranteed and so it goes away as well.

That's the downside to option years. If you release them early you have to buy them out.

Re: Gervasio Ridder Release Money?
I don't think its dumb at all. The contract agreement says that if he made a certain amount of AB's, innings, etc, that his contract vests. Well if you don't give him the chance to do that, he should get paid.
Now I know you'll say he won't have a chance since he'll just ride the pine. But, being on the team is a chance.

I don't think it's dumb or not dumb, but I do believe that it's not how the concept works in the MLB. That said, there probably is no specific way this works in the MLB--contracts (I think) tend to have clauses around what happens when the contract terminates prior to those years, and I'd guess they are bounded only by individual's imaginations.bcslouck wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 10:47 amI don't think its dumb at all. That said, I think OOTP is not particularly good at explaining how they process vesting situations.

Re: Gervasio Ridder Release Money?
Definitely not how it works in the MLB. I think the whole "football contracts are not guaranteed but they are in other sports" helps lead to this confusion. And I can definitely think of a few times teams were happy to cut a player and get out from his vesting option!RonCo wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 2:55 pmI don't think it's dumb or not dumb, but I do believe that it's not how the concept works in the MLB. This times a bajillion.
I don't have a problem eating an option year after cutting a player because I know how OOTP works. If you weren't aware of this (and there tends to be several threads on the OOTP forum each year with frustrated users making the exact same argument as Niles), I can see being blind-sided and upset. It should either be in the manual (hahahahahaha) and a "heads up" footnote on both the contract page when negotiating with a player and on teams' salary page. It might be something we ought to add to the constitution under the Basic Finances and General Management Rules portion.
