Interesting stat of the day

Post by RonCo » Thu Aug 29, 2019 3:27 pm

After reading stuff on reliever usage in the MLB these days, I got interested in how often (and which) BBA teams use their bullpen the most. So I did some view sorting in OOTP and transcribed the data, then noted which teams were playoff teams. No idea if it has any value, but I thought the results were very interesting...

Here's the Johnson League:
TeamIPSPRPSP%RP%PO
New Orleans Crawdads1437.331020.67416.6671.0%29.0%x
Las Vegas Hustlers1460100745369.0%31.0%x
Phoenix Talons1440.67975465.6767.7%32.3%x
Rockville Pikemen1457.33984.67472.6667.6%32.4%x
Nashville Goats1439.33941498.3365.4%34.6%
Huntsville Phantoms1433.33926.67506.6664.7%35.3%
Wichita Aviators1460.67936.33524.3464.1%35.9%
Atlantic City Gamblers1451.67929.33522.3464.0%36.0%
Mexico City Aztecs1465.67933.6753263.7%36.3%x
Jacksonville Hurricanes1444903.33540.6762.6%37.4%x
San Antonio Outlaws1451874.67576.3360.3%39.7%
Montreal Blazers1438.33866.3357260.2%39.8%
Louisville Sluggers1453.33847.67605.6658.3%41.7%
Charm City Jimmies144983761257.8%42.2%
Brooklyn Robins1457.67612845.6742.0%58.0%
I suppose it's not overly surprising that the top four teams are the most heavily reliant on their starters. But both Mexico City and Jacksonville dropped in the 36-37% reliever usage. And note Brooklyn, who juggled players around a lot and competed on a shoestring, but used relievers for a bulk of their innings.

Here's the Frick:
TeamIPSPRPSP%RP%PO
Seattle Storm14631032.33430.6770.6%29.4%

Yellow Springs Nine1467.33800.3366754.5%45.5%x
Madison Wolves1426622.67803.3343.7%56.3%
Seattle leaned on their starters harder than anyone, and almost made the show. The next five SP-heavy teams made the playoffs. Only my own Yellow Springs club was on the lower portion of the SP curve, and still won games--and (he says while he can), we won more games than anyone. Madison was Brooklyn-like at 56% of innings coming in relief (but not Brooklyn-like in that they were not in contention after maybe half-way through the season.

Kinda interesting, eh?

Interesting. And this was abnormal for me in that I uncapped my starters. I normally keep them under 100 pitch limits at all times.

I believe the Angels this year are going to be the first team to have more reliever innings than starter innings (and also the first team not to have a pitcher record more than 100 IP!). This happened because the lack of quality of starts and starters. I know Brooklyn achieved this on purpose based on the cyclone method. Haven’t looked at if Madison achieved it out of necessity or as a strategy.

yeah I hate my bullpen. Even my favorite pitcher in my bullpen, Huerta, blows a ton of saves. As a rule though, I tend to be more interested in throwing 10 mil at a starter than 10 mil on a reliever. Maybe unless that reliever was Peter Grady.

I am so happy to have him locked up at $7m per. I know he isn't the most talented RP out there, but I don't think any 2 relievers are as valuable as Peter is to us.

It isn't any surprise that we relied more heavily on the bullpen than any other JL playoff team (and our RP usage probably should have been closer to YS9)

I'm trying to get Wagner's usage figured out so that he can hopefully be similar to Grady. A guy like that is so valuable.

To get 5 WAR out of a reliever it might be worth it.
