BBA Discord?

Post by Rubaboo » Thu Aug 29, 2019 12:24 pm

So I know for awhile there we had a string of new applicants that said they heard about the BBA on Discord. Is there a BBA Discord Server? If so, can we get the link posted? If not, do we want one? It might be cool to have an easy way for guys to link up to talk trades and it would be an easy podcast platform. I can set something up if we want it. Thoughts on any of this?

What are the advantages of Discord compared to Slack? From what I know, I don't see the point in having both.

Might be interesting to look at. My only real concerns are that more communication platforms outside the forum dilute the capturing of history...but that's probably minor, and that adding extra technology creates in-groups of people who use it and those who do not--which is potentially a bigger deal.

Discord is a messaging service not dissimilar to Slack but geared more towards voice.

I find Discord to be easier for voice. With the podcasts and whatnot growing in popularity, I just figured I'd see if there was an interest in a dedicated BBA voice server. If it's not something we'd find useful that's totally fine, I'm just soliciting feedback.

Like I said, I think it's probably worth a try. I'm open for at least trying out about anything. :)

Regarding podcasts, it could well be a better option if it means people don't need Skype. It might also be a better option for things like Live Sims for the Landis or whatnot.

I am all about embracing technology and its important to remain relevant in the OOTP world with technology to get new gm's. I don't personally know what discord is but obviously people are using it. I think each platform provides advantages to us as a league.

Boards- Team News, league documents and history
Slack- group chats, league announcements, trade talks
Discord- podcast

Voice capability sounds good but I’m very wary of taking more focus off the forums. The BBA has always been what it is because it has always been forum based, the focus is there and so is all those rich years of history.

We’ve managed to survive the Slack revolution without much detraction from the forums, but adding discord might be a step too far? Maybe? I can perhaps see Discord instead of Slack but only perhaps if it aids our podcast production. Can it store the podcasts? Is it permanent? The knock on Slack is everything vanished into the ether after so many messages and I wouldn’t bother with Discord if the same thing happens? I might appear a bit of a Luddite but I’ve never used it?

Discord doesn't save anything as far as voice goes that I'm aware of. It would essentially be the tool we'd use instead of Skype to communicate with each other.

I have no intention of pulling focus off the boards. The history of the league is one of the reasons I joined and one of the reasons I stay. I will say this though: the live voice communication I've had over the last handful of seasons with other GMs on podcasts and various things has increased my immersion in the league immeasurably. People aren't just words on a screen when you hear their voices and can have an actual conversation. My hope in all of this would be not to use Discord as a replacement for writing, but to increase voice chat between users. Trades, live sims, the upcoming expansion draft, etc. There's opportunity to connect via voice that isn't there through PMs. Maybe I've just been lucky and have only touched base with the handful of you guys that aren't pricks (kidding, I'm sure you're all wonderful people), but all of the BBA-related voice experience I have has been positive.

I agree with all that. And it's my feeling that the BBA has always been open to moving and growing ... as long as it's done with care.

I know you're not looking to break the focus on history and focus. :) All I'm saying is that when we try it, I'd suggest it be fully with the idea that it's a trial or prototype. We can always kill something that's causing problems.

I'd love a BBA discord. I'm an owner of a pretty large online board game lfg. Discord also has private video sharing and screensharing similar to Skype, so I could envision live sims being hosted on Discord with really good quality. I'm a big fan of Discord, but we have a lot of boomers in the league that miss the good old days of newspapers, black and white TVs and 8 track players :P

all it would be used for is a skype replacement. It wont kill anything that skype and slack haven't already killed.

actually recte might appreciate this, its more of a replacement for google hangouts than anything else.

Discord is better than Slack, but S+ doesn't integrate with it. I would be cautious of fracturing participation among 3 platforms (forum, Slack, Discord), even if each brings different advantages. The forum should be the hub of activity, IMHO.

But... newer, younger owners can see forums as antiquated, and wonder why we aren't running everything on Discord. I don't like Discord-only leagues, but I'm old, so....
