Fun Stat of the Day #2: Pitcher Retaliation

Post by RonCo » Tue Aug 13, 2019 2:01 pm

On a lark, I went through the game log file and did a quick search on HBP that happened after a HR—in other words, how often did, perhaps, a pitcher retaliate for a homer?

All total there were 58 such occurrences.

No pitcher had more than two. Those pitchers were:
  • Josh Brown: Twin Cities River Monsters
  • Luther Summers: Seattle Storm
  • Miguel Corona: San Fernando Bears
  • Rahmat Subadio: Madison Wolves
  • Bobby Lynch: Calgary Pioneers
Lynch did one of his with Edmonton.

Here’s the breakout by team:

Madison, Omaha, YS, and Des Moines all with three or more. The Heartland maybe takes things a little more seriously than the rest.

I'm surprised Troop isn't up there. Leads the league in HBP with 21. I've always thought of him as an aggressive pitcher that plays with a lot of emotion. I haven't seen a pitcher with quite as many HBPs each year. Not really sure what causes it, but I kind of like it.

Only 3 retaliations in 183 allowed. No wonder I can’t win I have a bunch of choir boys on my staff.

Hmm. Has anyone attempted a bunt after the fifth inning while being no hit? Who broke the unwritten rule?

I gotta start telling my guys to stick up for themselves. Or, it could just be that none of them have enough control to actually hit someone on purpose.

It took a little doing, but I can't find a bunt after the fifth inning during a no-hitter. I can find two in the fifth itself.

- April 14th, Montreal's Kel Bacon bunted with one out at Jacksonville in the fifth. He was out. The next guy doubled: https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... g_171.html

- June 23rd, Boise's José Rivera bunted in the fifth against California. It was actually a sacifice bunt, happening after a HBP: https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... _1133.html

So what we are saying here is, Clint Hurdle doesn't manage in the BBA....

And I would have pegged Wichita for having way more. You know, the Genius and all. :P
