I noticed him as newbie. 33yr old with 500 career home runs. Should it have been signed for less or more?

This involves an absolute shitshow of a debate in which people start threatening each other's families. I'm of the mind we're skewed way to hard towards spending all the money on elite players, and other reasonable smart people think this is fine.

In all seriousness though, it's too much for AAV, but as Louisville's savvy GM pointed out in his team news, this is essentially a crack at a one year rental at 31 mil by a team that is flush with cap space and has few things to do with it. If Marintez opts out (he very well might), Louisville also gets a comp pick. So they're trying to spend money to buy a pick as well. If he sticks around, he'll make a lot less next year (still overpaid, but not as bad) and will likely never vest for years 3 and 4.

So it's an overpay, but it's a calculated overpay that makes sense for the team at this time.

Got all 3 of my guys signed so I'm happy about that. That Alfredo Martinez contract though...sheesh

Yeah I agree with Ted. I saw the amount of money and thought it was an immense overpay, but it's an interesting move by Louisville and could be a strategy I think about in the future.

The Louisville deal is an interesting gamble, but it had some nice features. Limited duration, the opportunity for a draft pick...a very good player ski will win games and put fans in the seat.

I think the biggest problem some guys get into is not actually spending their budgets during a build... and this helps avoid that. [Grin]

I don't really like the deal.

For starters... Who was Louisville bidding against? I didn't see any offers on him in the first several free agent sims. I think they could have waited it out more or tried to lowball him. I really don't see any other team in the BBA making an offer anywhere close to that for an injury prone DH. Maybe you could make a case for Charm City? A quick looks will see they are focusing on Behner.

And as far as helping Louisville, I don't think he does. They are still not a playoff team with him. His FI + making them more competitive bump is negated by the extreme salary. And I don't think he will opt out or garner a comp pick. Louisville has said they are going to play him at DH, DH takes a WAR hit, our Comp system is based off of WAR. That's without factoring in his inevitable DL trips. And players view all options as guaranteed. So after next year, he is opting against 3 years and over $100 million to test free agency for his age 35+ seasons.

I'm not killing the deal or telling anyone how to sign free agents. I just don't see the value in this deal over spending the $50 million in IFA, buying prospects, or just loading up the bonus funds for the eventual push.

Lot to respond to there, but I'll start with a question:

What hurts WAR more, the standard positional adjustment for playing DH, or his recent horrific defensive numbers in RF? I don't know how OOTP calculates it (BRef, Fangraphs).

I really don't know how it's calculate. I'm sure others are better to answer that question then me. I know DH causes a hit, I know declining outfield defense will cause a hit too. So either way one would assume that even if he has an identical offensive season that his WAR would be less. And as it was, he was just barely comp eligible last year and was not the year before.

I'm really not trying to cause a big debate. I disagree with those who say it's a good signing. But my team sucks and I make a lot of mistakes. So I can easily be wrong.

Fair enough. I had reasons for doing everything I did, but you could easily be right in the end, especially if he doesn't stop with the aggressive mayo spreading.

AS long as Martinez stays healthy enough to play, I'd guess his WAR will be enough to garner at least a second round supplemental. If he stays healthy, he could make a first. The bigger question is whether he'll opt out. Classic OOTP dogma says "all players will choose to opt out if they can," but Ted's work last year showed that's not actually true. Players make good choices and bad choices, which I kind of like, really.

These kinds of deals are great to talk about, though...which is about standard for a sjshaw move. :)

I'm here all week...tip your bartenders. :)

That said, he's played 115 games the past couple years, and dropped Supplemental #1 WAR kinds of numbers, so it's not a horrible stretch to see him at least that healthy.
