One of these things is not like the other...

I'm fiddling with some data and thinking about writing an article for the Media Guide...but in the process came up with this interesting chart...

Here's the overall WAR that has been created to date from each year's draft class. I realize totally that we still have good players around accumulating WAR from even as far back as the 2020-2022 period, so you gotta be careful making too much of certain things here...I mean, not all the precincts have reported, but...

2016...woah...

Even taking out the ridiculous outlier, those totals are shockingly high.

The best MLB draft in the last 20 years or so was 2005, which even then only produced about 500 in career WAR...that would only rank about 6th in the last 25 BBA drafts. Good or bad, it's at least eye opening.

I suspect the pre-2016 numbers are more an example of how OOTP managed careers (the injury model was probably cut way back). The guys who were here then would have to say for sure. 2020 and 2021 look horrible and 2032 looks like another down year, though the clock is still running, of course. 29 and beyond might be more just because the league expanded?

All that said, the other thing you have to take into account is that there will always be a question about how OOTP calculates WAR.
