Vargas Headed for Retirement
Manny Vargas said he will miss "leading the boys into battle" after this season. At 38 years old, the team leader of the Des Moines Kernels has announced he will retire at season's end.
"I've always tried to be a guy that leads by example and I'd like to think I've been a good leader in my career," he said. "There's a lot of things I'm going to miss about the sport, but I think most of all is the camaraderie with the guys."
Since he broke in, Vargas has picked up 65 wins, 79 losses and 194 saves. He has posted a 4.03 ERA and recorded 881 strikeouts in 1183.1 innings.

Time's Up: McIntyre to Retire
William McIntyre said it was an easy decision to announce that this will be his last year of professional baseball.
"I'm 41 years old," the Seattle Storm first baseman said. "Some of the guys in the clubhouse are young enough to be my son. It's time to go before I start getting white hairs."
Lifetime in 2193 games McIntyre is batting .271 with 212 home runs and 850 RBIs.

2-4, not what I was hoping for with six home games.
Juan Guerrero won both games to go to 10-4. His reward: being left off the All Star ballot.
On the plus side, only lost 2 fan interest points in trading "extremely popular" Ward.
On the negative side, Hahn didn't suffer a CEI.
Game predicted YE Balance now projected at -$2.6 million.
More accurate estimate is -$1.1 million (after factoring in not spending anymore Intl Amateur or Draft dollars).
This is good (since it was over -$10 million), helped enormously by the Ward trade.
After factoring in Colon being gone (either by him opting out or refusing his team option), Rodruguez not reaching his vesting rqmt, and a couple of other minor cuts, Payroll for next year would be at $79 million. Depends, of course, on results of arbitration on several significant players.
Soto also has an opt out opportunity, but I'm expecting him not to opt out. Too much money on the table. He'll never get as much as a FA. Maybe his agent will be stupid. Give me, an old IT guy, fifteen minutes with the OOTP code, please.

Damn. Mitsuhide Suzuki is going back to school even though we exceeded his demand by a WIDE margin. Oh, well. Ohayashi will, at the very least, be joining the organization. Not a great year for signings despite putting in some good offers.

This has been quite a fun back and forth in a divisional race that nobody saw coming. Rockville is like the prodigal son picked by everyone as a team likely to run away with the division. Brooklyn is like the bastard child that everybody loves to hate. I still think you are going to run away with it. I'm more concerned with Montreal and the rest of the teams chasing the back end of the wild card. But in the end, all I can do is what I've been doing all season. Making a game plan for each individual game and trying to figure out what matchups(1-27 on my roster) give me the best chance to win that day.

Fun fact: Sandcastle is currently 8th all time in career WAR and is still 64 points off the #1 (Charles Puckett) spot. Puckett has more career WAR than #23 (Moronobu) and #24 (Heredia) combined. And #5 on that leaderboard is his former double-play mate, Bopper Kengos. Damn Wolves...
