Since I've kept this up for a bit, I decided it would be good to create a landing place I can link future reports to that describes the tool I use to create the data. So, here it is...
To compile this data, I run a custom script (written in perl) that scans all game loges. The process does the following steps:
1) Pulls batted ball location (by zone in the field) and type (ground ball, fly ball, line drive, bunt)
2) Determines simple “out, error, hit,” results.
3) Then, zone by zone, compiles the total numbers of each "out, hit, error"
4) For each zone, calculates a baseline league average for how often a ball s turned into an out.
5) At this point, we take the actual balls hit into each zone against each pitching team to determine the number of plays an average fielder would have made.
6) Then, for each type of contact in each zone, subtract the number of outs an "average" defender in the position would have created from the actual number the team made.
7) The final PAA total is a simple sum of the GB/FB/LD(infield)/LD(outfield) values for each team
