Markus indicates the big Online League updates are scheduled for a June release. This means we'll play the 2005 season with OOTP 12 and re-evaluate after that.

Sounds good to me.

No need to rush in to 13. It should be nice but if we moved fast to it after the last debacle I'd wonder about some folks sanity.

What are the plans from the OOTPOU and StatsLab guys? OOTPOU's Dev parser is sweet (although v13 kind of steals the thunder a bit) and the Draft util is miles better, but they don't do squat to enhance stats (basically just HTML views of reports already in-game...and I've found a couple of pages that have errors just in that).

There are no plans right now. I know OOTPOU will convert at some point, but Fhomess has been relatively uninvolved with updating StatsLab since OOTP11.

I really wish we'd switch sooner, if only for the memory leak improvements. :)

Memory leak?

And I do miss the robust statistical searches one could do with StatsLab. Is the basic reason we switched was because it was no longer being supported?

Getch has updated OU for OOTP 13 and we've been using it. He's actually been to our forums and has helped troubleshoot a couple items. All in all, it does lack the bells and whistles of StatsLab, but it's more reliable and updates faster.

I can't find it but I posted Getch's planned updates/new features that he put on the OOTP forums here somewhere. Seemed like some significant changes and directed at some of the things I felt were the biggest shortcomings moving over from StatsLab. I've got a server that I've thought about setting up as a test "online" league just to see it in action.

Are we planning to move to 13 this off-season? Have we discussed this any more?

The reason I am asking is because I got a new laptop, and am having all kinds of licensing issues, and I am wondering how hard I should push on it (it was a PITA the last time).

I have 13 now and looking forward going to it. I would like to see some type of time line for our conversion. If any one has a step by step instruction that may help us all with the changeover.

I still think that switching this offseason is the plan.

It really depends if Matt wants to go the "official Online League" route that they kind of bungled in v12. It's supposed to be better in v13.

As far as users I don't know that there is any step-by-step required. They really didn't change the core mechanics outside of the pitcher development model (which takes some getting used to...big time), they just completely overhauled the interfaces. Below is OOTP's outline of the new Pitching Model including why it was done and how it more accurately represents reality (honestly, how many elite pitching prospects come out of high school or college as relievers or closers?):

The new Pitching Model is the main new feature, and it's so much improved from previous versions.

I'm happy to switch this off-season, if the online league thingy isn't ready then perhaps we can switch to that later

Improved, yes, but also changed. If you plan your pitching as you always have you WILL wind up sucking. I mean, one could argue that I suck anyway, but I'm talking "starting rotation by committee" kind of SOL...

Ben,

Could you expand a little on your comments regarding 13 pitching. I don't have much experience with it and I am sure there are others that would be interested in hearing about the impact on starting pitching.

I guess the easiest way to explain it is that in version 12, when new players come in via the amateur draft or free agents (from foreign leagues or what have you), you can look at a pitcher's position just like position players: if a guy is labeled "SP" then you can feel confident he has the stamina, variety of pitches, control, etc. to be best as a starter. And the odds are very good that starters will stay starters and relievers will stay relievers for the bulk of their career barring injury/age.

In 13, the ability of pitchers to fill one role or the other is a lot more fluid and - more importantly - not so cut and dried. First, when pitchers enter the league they are probably 70%, maybe even 80%, SPs. There are hardly any closers at all. This reflects the fact that a guy could have used just a high-90s fastball and a slider to dominate college ball as a starter. But with just 2 pitches, he's not likely to pull that off in the pros...but he'll still be labeled "SP" because that's what he's done 'til then. Then, once players are drafted, they can pick up/drop pitches on a yearly basis. So whether you installed a guy as a starter or reliever in AA-ball, you've got to watch his development and see if he's trending towards more MOV and CON so might be more successful as a starter. Vice-versa if you have a guy who's control stagnates at 4 you probably need to move him to the 'pen.

Finally, and again I'm guesstimating, for the league as a whole around 80% of pitchers seem to fall between 4 and 6/7 Stamina. In my solo league I have a guy with 9 Stamina but only 2 pitches including a 99 mph fastball and 5 control. If I wasn't looking deeper into numbers I might have tossed him in my rotation because guys that can go 130+ innings are so rare. So, from the time a pitcher enters the league until he retires you have to keep a close eye on what role he fits at the moment and less on what role he's played in his career.

Hope that helps. I assumed you were asking strictly about the game and not baseball in general. If anything I said contradicts the post I linked to above, or anything Matt says in reply, then go with them.

Thanks Ben that was exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate you explaining it.
