While the voting pages don't' necessarily specify how many to vote for (really applicable to OF and P), I found the voting to be quicker in these utilities.

1 each standard position - 3 OF, 5 SP, 5 RP per league.

Would be nice if there were more information like the old utility. Particularly defensive info. Particularly with catchers and middle infielders, it would be nice to not have to vote just on offense.

Just make sure you vote for
Jeremy Hunter and
Constantine Mitrani and your picks will be fine....

I thought I had read that we vote for back up position players also. So, no?

Hunter and Brummett is an interesting battle. Hunter has a higher ISO (.215 to .186) and the wOBA's are identical (.386 to .386). But Brummett's EBH is 36 to Hunter's 26. Brummett also has the higher WAR (3.2 to 2.5) which is kind of surprising. I don't know. It's a tough choice.

Hunter has been walked intentionally 13 times!

No. They are chosen later.

So that means his OBP which is his strength is distorted then. That would weaken his case. Really the only thing he has on Brummett is the higher walk totals. So if 13 of those are intentional it weakens that area.

Neither one can throw out base runners. So you go with the guy who can, and who is also able to drive in runs. Batting average not that important.

no, that means that he is doing all his good with no one behind him in the lineup! ELECT HUNTER!

Batting average not that important? There are some guys in the Hall of Fame who would differ with that.

Brummett has him in almost all offensive areas. Isn't that what all-star games are about? The best hitters at each position against the best pitchers.

Um, no. It should be the best players versus the best pitchers. So defense counts, as does speed and base running abilities.
In particular, catchers are supposed to: (a) catch (b) guide a pitching staff (c) throw out runners
and be a threat to throw out runners (d) drive in runs.
After all that comes (e) batting average.

Um, yes. Take a look at all the "best catchers" in the game today. They all get judged on their bat as much as their glove. Yes, the ability to call a game is more important then the ability to throw out runners. Bases are stolen off the pitchers as much as they are off the catchers. A smart pitcher can take away the running game as much as any threat of a good throwing catcher. You honestly think fans vote for the best defensive catchers when they are voting for all-stars?? Don't think so. Your argument holds more water for a year long evaluation of the position. Not for an all-star game.

Who would win more often with the same pitching: a team of gold glove winners or silver slugger winners?

INMHO Silver Sluggers. I don't disagree with what Al is saying if we were talking about the over all evaluation of the position. Just not when we are talking an all-star game.
However, I think that in today's game a catcher has to be able to contribute with the bat as much as behind the plate on contending teams.
Can't check at the moment, but I think Brummett actually has a better % throwing out runners at the moment.
