Re: 2039-2040 Offseason Compensation Thresholds
Nope, just a reward for the teams who lose a qualifying player (if signed before the deadline). In my first go-around in free agency last year, I asked the same question, since it varies from MLB. Of course, OOTP doesn't have the benefit of being able to tender an offer sheet like in MLB, either.ThePreyingManta wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 2:44 pmJust to clarify, is there any penalty for signing a compensation-eligible free agent?
I also asked -- in the forum, I believe -- if the potential of losing a comp pick for signing an eligible player would change the free agency market, specifically contract demands. One would think if a penalty was tied to a player, there would be less offers, therefore theoretically possibly causing free agents to lower their demands. Not looking for any rule changes, just an interesting theory regarding the game engine.

There's no penalty for the player's new team. The BBA only gives, not taketh away...not much different than me in my past relationships.

Re: 2039-2040 Offseason Compensation Thresholds
Having been in a league where signing an eligible FA did cause you to lose a pick, it seems that the game engine doesn't automatically account for it but contract demands will fall if the players remain unsigned for a while. That's what happened in this league. Many good players would not sign until after the draft, and when they did sign it would be at a greatly discounted price.jleddy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 3:04 pmNope, just a reward for the teams who lose a qualifying player (if signed before the deadline). The game doesn't lower asking prices well in my experience. They stay at a similar range and sometimes just fall off a cliff (and sometimes a roster able player sits out an entire year because he never lowers his demands)

Re: 2039-2040 Offseason Compensation Thresholds
I'm with Randy on this one. It doesn't make sense that there's no cut off and it's not like it happens all the time. Most players are too good to be hanging around until the season starts and then they have to perform well enough afterwards to qualify. They also would have to be signed to a one year deal.usnspecialist wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 12:00 pmI was using the same principle that prohibits midseason trades from being ineligible regardless of how much they earn at each stops (as Rhodes did for me).
I'm guessing you would be hard pressed to find 2 or 3 guys in the last ten seasons for whom that's happened.
I'll say this though, it's not a hill to die on either way. It's probably not going to occur all that often for it to be an issue.

Less comp the better so it seems to me anyway it would make sense to put the stricter definition of must have been on the roster the entire season into play.

Re: 2039-2040 Offseason Compensation Thresholds
Wow. Didnt expect to gin up so much controversy here! FWIW, based on my read I thought he would be eligible for a comp pick. That was part of my calculus when i chose not to re-sign him (and why I havent yet made him an offer in FA). Of course, none of that is relevant unless he actually signs with someone before opening day.
While we are at it...what are the odds I can get some comp picks for Hank Brewer (4.1 WAR) and Joe Whitaker (2.7 WAR - RP) who I lost in the expansion draft?!

I’m just saying one transaction shouldn’t impact two different offseason comp lists.

Re: 2039-2040 Offseason Compensation Thresholds
Can we get this in the constitution ASAP?
Also, someone mentioned it last year after I brought up a player being eligible for comp but signing a MiLC. I was given the pick, but agree that probably isn't deserved. Any chance that can be discussed, ruled on, and thrown in as well? I'd suggest MiLC or UMEBA signings should negate draft pick comp. But even if you guys go the other way, just to have it in writing somewhere.

Does Esteban Cuervo qualify? 2.3 WAR last year... signed by Charm City.

Cuervo was not offered arbitration by the team (left as a result of a team decision), so he does not qualify to receive compensation.shoeless.db wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 10:57 amDoes Esteban Cuervo qualify? 2.3 WAR last year... signed by Charm City.

Not bitching or demanding anything. Just count me in the side that thinks we need to tighten up the criteria some. Seems like way too many comp picks and it's becoming easy to capitalize on it.
