Taking a quick spin through last year's stats, and doing my best to look at which players qualify...here's what I get for FA with compensation:

gillstrom technically signed after opening day, so I dont think he is eligible for a pick.

That made him ineligible for you, right? Not sure if that matters for Jim.

I think Randy is right, though I admit I'm not sure. I've removed him from the list for now, but the Governing Board should discuss whether he should be added back.

I don't really get why when a player signs would impact 2 different years of compensation.

Hmm, I would think Brandon is right. A player's WAR total should affect their next off-season compensation, regardless of when the player was signed...signing later just makes it harder to accumulate the WAR.

@RonCo Alfredo Salazar put up 3.0 WAR, so I believe he should be eligible for a Type B pick for Boise, despite his 2040 option not vesting (per Constitution).

I can see it both ways. I really haven't dug into this too deeply until the last year or two, and the constitution isn't actually as structured as it should be. I think the intent, though, was to limit compensation to players who were with a team for the entire season. For example, though the constitution isn't precisely clear, we don't provide comp picks for guys traded in mid-year, regardless of how many WAR they created for one team or another. (see: Rhodes, Dusty, who gathered 3.9 WAR for SFB in a partial season).

Regardless, I'll get it confirmed, and if we need to adjust the constitution to fit what our practice is/has been, we'll do so.

Yes, Salazar should be on there. Will Include.

Seeing Wichita with the most potential compensation picks to gain with four (including two for relievers), maybe there is something to be said about that Genius moniker... ;)

This is my seasonal gripe about the amount of compensation picks. I loathe it immensely. If I were comprised of an analytic soul, I'd compose an essay detailing these picks' unbalanced nature towards competitiveness and fair play with the inclusion of graphs, spreadsheets, and some wit. Instead, I will whine to the wind and scurry back to the immature insights of Sai and Aarav.

I can't seem to find where in the Constitution it states a player must sign before opening day to qualify for a comp pick the next winter. Either qoute rule or it's just #fakenews.

I was using the same principle that prohibits midseason trades from being ineligible regardless of how much they earn at each stops (as Rhodes did for me).

As if the Governing Board didn't already know who left the "compensation picks = wonky" note in the suggestion box, which smelled of both curry and Drakkar Noir...

Trades are way different than signing a guy though. Especially this situation. It's not like you dropped him after Opening Day and then Jim picked him up. It doesn't really make sense to have a player lose compensation for 2 seasons because of 1 transaction.

The Opening Day thing has been said somewhere and was enforced when Randy lost him last year. Jim signed him right after Opening Day. That conversation is probably on last years compensation list. It sucked but made sense given you need a cutoff for that. But I don't think this needs one.

I bet if we did the research, there has probably been dozens of players signed after opening day who received comp picks. This is not a real rule. Just lobbying for a rule change. Put him back on the list.

Just to clarify, is there any penalty for signing a compensation-eligible free agent?
