Post by recte44 » Sat May 18, 2019 11:50 am

Official 2040 BBA Expansion Details:
  • We will expand to 32 teams in 2040.
  • The league structure will be 4 divisions of 8 teams
  • Schedule: 14 games vs. each division opponent, 8 against each outside our division. No inter-league.
  • There will be a total of 12 playoff teams, 4 division winners and 8 total wild cards
  • The teams will be aligned as listed below.
  • One expansion team will be in the Johnson League Atlantic (Charlotte) with GM to be announced
  • One expansion team will be in the Frick League Pacific (Portland) with GM to be announced
Divisional Realignment:

Code: Select all

Expansion Process:
1) The expansion draft will occur after the 2039 Landis is complete
2) All players with three professional seasons or less on draft day will be automatically protected
3) Existing teams will be able to protect an additional 19 players
4) The two expansion teams will alternate selecting players in an order determined by random coin flip.
5) Once an existing team has lost three players, no additional selections may be made from that club
6) The draft will continue until each existing team has lost three players

2040 Draft:
The expansion teams will receive the #1 and #2 slots, with the team who lost the expansion draft coin flip being slotted first.

2041 Draft:
Per constitution rules, expansion teams will be slotted into this and future drafts based on their winning percentages.

How does one tell how many professional seasons a player has? I see it in game, but it is only a whole number. I assume this is a years/days type thing.

The best thing to do is wait till after this season, then check. Any player with 2 years experiance after this season will be have 3 after next year. That is what I plan on doing anyway. I'll make a short list for future reference.

So is it 3 and under or under 4? So if a guy has 3 yrs and 150 days is he protected or eligible?

Thanks. Figured that was it, just wanted to check. Based on my farm depth someone will be getting 3 decent guys.

How will playoff seeding work? With 6 playoff teams per league, 2 teams will be getting byes. Will those be the division winners, with all 4 wild card teams playing in the Geo?

And JAX-RCK will be a knock-down, drag-out in 2040 I'm sure.

So 2039, 2038, and 2037 draft picks will all be protected, correct? (players aren't drafted until June, which should mean they don't accumulate a full year of pro service that first year after being drafted....).

International guys who were promoted to the minors at least 12 days into the ML season in 2037 should still be safe, anything before that and they will hit the 172 day mark to achieve a full year of service (or are we counting guys in the IC who are not professionals as accruing pro service time?)

We really could use a “how do we know” if a player will be exposed. There are lots of workarounds and assumptions, but I don’t think it’s clear to most of us.

One example:
https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 42225.html

Signed as a minor league free agent 10/2/2035. It appears he will turn 3, right before the expansion draft, so I’d need to protect him. But the game is going to show “3” years of service, making it look like he meets the “3 or less” criteria.

Just looking for clarity on this important point.
I also don’t know when the game turns him 3. Will it be 10/2/2038, or at the start of the league year (or another time)?

Correction...im off a year, but my point remains for other players.

Good questions/comments. Given how OOTP does things, it's a little...um...complicated because pro years toggle on January 1. Given this:

1) Players with 2 years (and any number of days) of professional time today will be eligible for the draft. (*)
2) Players with 1 year (and any number of days) of professional time will not be eligible for the draft

(*) They will go to 3 years, 0 days on January 1, then begin accruing additional days as the season progresses, so by expansion draft day they will have 3 years, XXX days as a professional.

More teams and less divisions? Why? It seems counter intuitive to how we do everything else to pretend we are mimicking MLB. Seems like it would be more enjoyable to have 6 or 8 divisions and give more teams a chance to win their division...we are doing this for fun, right?

One thing is certain. Not everyone is going to be happy with every decision. I just try to take it in stride and know that the GB is doing great work here keeping this league running smoothly. The ever changing climate makes it hard, and is frustrating at times, but it also keeps it interesting. Those that can adapt best quickly have an advantage. Those that can’t (and I’m speaking about myself here recently) struggle. And that’s fine by me.

The division setup was driven by the schedule. The GB liked what the schedule looked like with 4 divisions better than 8 divisions. Plus the decision was between 4 or 8 divisions, 6 not really being an option. The outcome is the same as with 8 divisions, as far as having the same amount of playoff teams.

And as a general rule I don't think we really mimic MLB that much.

Yeah. We discussed four-team divisions to an extent, but scheduling with them was pretty ugly.

I think we try to mimic the feel of an MLBish baseball environment as much as practical, but we deviate often.

I can see the argument both ways on number of divisions. I think 8 divisions (4 in each league) would have made for more fun to try and win your division. Perhaps created and or allowed for more rivalry stuff there. On the downside, I think you run the real possibility of a division or two being weak and a team winning a weak division and getting into the post-season with a poor record.

With just 4 divisions, winning your division becomes a real honor now as no division is going to be easy to win. And by using 4 of the 6 playoff spots in each league for wild cards, you're likely guaranteeing the top 6 teams from both sides of making the post-season. It would be HIGHLY unlikely that the first team missing out on a wild card spot would have a better record than the team that won the other division in a league under this format.

You can always imagine different scenarios. I think (personal opinion here) that bigger divisions gives me more rivalries.

I'm also heavily on record as coveting division titles, so a side effect here is that the bonus for being a division winner is that you get a playoff bye--so there's always a value to trying to win the division. I understand that these things that are "fun" for me are maybe not the same as for everyone else, though. Heck, after things have stabilized again, if we find big divisions are causing malaise among the majority, I'm sure we can consider different configurations.

4 divisions will just encourage more tanking...being 7th in one's division after a month will be like being the cubs of old: "Why are you talking to me, our season ended the first week of May."

But the amount of playoff teams is the same either way so I'm not really seeing the difference.

Plus with 8 divisions you have to play more games outside your division than inside which diminishes the value/point of divisions.
