GOV BOARD STATEMENT: Regarding Draft Classes and Recent Ratings Concerns

Post by recte44 » Tue Apr 23, 2019 10:34 am

SUBJECT: Governing Board Statement Regarding Draft Classes and Recent Ratings Concerns.

TLDR version:

After extensive testing, the BBA Governing Board believes that our latest big draft class was primarily caused by two issues in our feeder leagues. The first is that college teams have 110-150 players on their rosters (some hidden), and the second is that that the IFA, one of our HS feeders, was set to release all its players to the draft class rather than just the oldest (seniors). While our PCMs are probably creating some issues that we will clean up over time, there is no indication that expansion or the UMEBA created an inappropriately sized draft class.

We have created an action plan to address these findings.

Full Report: Overview and Problem Statement

Recently many league members have expressed healthy concerns about the basic ratings environment in the BBA—most focused on the raw size and quality of our most recent draft class, but some broader in nature. Questions raised include:

• How do we have 6,000+ players in the draft class?
• Why was our last draft class so huge in top-heavy superstar prospects?
• Are the expanded draft classes going to cause our ratings to run-away to the point where our players are all rated 10/10/10?
• Did the existence of our expansion process cause this (either the 2029 or 2034)?
• Or did the creation of the UMEBA cause it?
• Is this caused by cranking up our PCMs to make big draft classes?
• Is it related to our aging settings (we are getting considerably younger)

In other words, there’s a lot going on.

In response, we’ve spent considerable time both exploring our file and running controlled experiments on test leagues. To get to the meat, I’ll outline what we plan to do first, then address each individual issue in subsequent posts.

The Plan Going Forward:

Off-Season 2038-2039:
1) Fix the college/HS feeders.
2) Bump the EYE PCM up to about 1.2 to make it match up with the rest.

June 2039:
3) Review the next draft class (and HS/College ranks) to determine if numbers are back to where we prefer them. Given the flow of players, we may need to do this for two or three seasons. Depending on what we think of that data, either do nothing or …

Off-season 2040:
4) Drop the PCMs a little and monitor it year over year until we're happy with the equilibrium that results.
