2061.02 A Friendly Faceblind

GM Rob McMonigal sat in the admittedly kinda nice office of the Johannesburg Gold General Manager, wondering what to do. He'd somehow been transported here with no ability to let anyone know his plight. Worse, while the BBA off-season was going on, he was here in the middle of the GBC, a league he'd never planned to return to, expected to find players for an expansion team.

A sane man probably would have walked out the door. But McMonigal's sense of responsibility just wouldn't let him. After all, it wouldn't be fair when the real general manager returned to leave him with a poorly constructed team.

So he got to work, looking over the free agents who might actually be willing to go to the GBC. One name immediate stood out to him, Khawaja Patel! Surely someone who used to play for the Nine would recognize him and help him out of this mix-up!

He called Patel and offered to fly him in. The owner wouldn't be happy about the expense, but it was worth it. Soon, Patel showed up at the door, all six feet five inches of him. Patel had spent 2060 in the independent leagues in his native India, which was a little concerning, but McMonigal felt that not only could he help the Gold – he could help McMonigal, too.

"Khawaja! It's good to see you again," said McMonigal.

Patel looked completely taken aback.

"Have we met?" he asked.

"Yes, a few years ago. You played for my team."

Blank stare.

"I'm sorry, I have no idea who you are, Mr. Control."

"You were really unhappy when I refused to offer you arbitration. Said you'd prove me wrong." (And then didn't, but that was beside the point.)

"You've got the wrong guy, sir. I only came here because you were offering me a chance to get back into a professional baseball league."

"Nothing about me seems familiar?"

"No, sorry. It probably doesn't help that I'm face blind."

McMonigal slapped himself.

"Are you okay, sir?" asked Patel.

"I'm fine," said McMonigal, sighing. "Now, let's have a seat and discuss our open closer position..."
