The Greatest ever Riyadh team

Aug 25 @ Beirut L 3-8
Aug 26 @ Mumbai W 5-2
Aug 27 @ Mumbai W 12-8 (F/15)

Aug 28 @ Mumbai L 1-7
Aug 30 @ Baghdad W 12-3
Aug 31 @ Baghdad W 9-6

With the Red Crescents’ 70th win secured in the first game at Mumbai, we stretched out our 71st win to make this current side the greatest ever team to pull on the Red Crescents jersey as the next game went to 15 innings (the joint second longest in our history). After scoring in all of the first five innings we led 8-4 and were looking good, but the Metro Stars came back with two homers in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game up and send it to extras. Both team’s bats were silent until the top of the 15th innings when Roy MacGugan supplied a 2-run homer to put the seal on a 4-run innings. It was Riyadh’s 21st hit of the game and their highest ever win tally was sealed when Pedro Ortiz sat down Mumbai 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the innings. Riyadh had 71 wins, the most in their history and by the end of the week were eight wins away from their first ever .500 season.

Even away trips don’t seem to faze Riyadh anymore, with a game to go in this current trip the Red Crescents are 6-2 on the trip and 36-35 on the road overall in 2049. It seems that our aversion to away days has been overcome. One of our best additions so far this season was undoubtedly Kevin Morales, the 37-yr-old now has a 15-3 record, 104 K’s and an ERA under three; he has now finally put pen to paper on a new 2-year deal worth $13 million and celebrated by picking up the UMEBA Burt pitcher of the month award for August. We have also added a few more thirtysomethings to the Port Elizabeth roster on minor league deals so we can check them out in the last few weeks of the Triple-A season and thanks to the roster expansion we added one major league signing, 28-yr-old Patrick Whitlock, straight into the Riyadh bullpen. Fresh off a 3-0 season and an ERA around three in 2048 with Omaha in the BBA we are looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Talking of the roster expansion we added major leaguers Alberto Contreras and Ivan Thomas back onto the Riyadh roster as backups. Another big move we made was to release backup catcher Peter Davenport, we had just got so tired of his constant whining and underproduction. He wasn’t going to be worth the $6.5 million team option we held for 2050. We added in 28-yr-old Cris Cordero to Riyadh as a backup, we had just picked him up a a minor league FA after Las Vegas released him. Our final addition to the expanded roster was 32-yr-old Atissi Mbamba, signed as a minor league free agent we have added him in as he is an elite fielder at second, third and short. We may well have vacant starter spots or backup roles in the infield next season so we needed to have a look to see if Atissi can do a job for us
