Will Bessi be Dogar before Dogar is Dogar?

In 2048 Umar “All-Star Jr” Doger was drafted first overall by Riyadh. The hype, as his nickname suggests, was instant. He was the player that would lead the Red Crescents into the golden age, he was going to be the first home drafted player to crack the Riyadh lineup. He started like a house of fire, breezed through Double-A winning two of his five starts there with a 1.60 ERA before hitting Triple-A before his rookie year was half over. 14 starts there and he had a 7-0 record with a 2.71 ERA; at the end of 2048 he had 19 minor league starts, nine wins and not a single defeat. This year he made the expected leap into the UMEBA in his sophomore year as a professional baseball pitcher, the fanbase was shocked when his Riyadh debut was his first pro loss, was the hype just that? Would he fade away with only a whimper? Dogar was worth the hype though, his next three games brought three wins with only two runs given up by him. The fans waivered again when this young 20-yr-old kid gave up eight runs in his next four outings while being tagged with two losses. Whispers in the back street Souks suggesting he ought to be returned to Port Elizabeth for “seasoning” were quickly squashed when his next three starts saw him post a 3-0 record with just three runs allowed. The only nagging doubt was the 25 walks he had allowed in his 11 games, OK he had struck out 68 batters in the same time, but it was the only real black mark the doubters could seize on. That final win of the three though, on May 28th, he didn’t look quite right coming off the mound in the sixth innings. To the shock of Red Crescent Nation, it was announced the next day that Umar had torn a rotation cuff and would not pitch again until into 2050. Two UMEBA Rookie of the Month awards and an All-Star selection, but now the fans were plunged into mourning. Was their great home-produced star finished? Would he be the same when he came back? Would he still be Dogar?

Umar Dogar – Riyadh Star --------- Dirk Bessi – The Next Star after Dogar?

Meanwhile those in the know already had a Dogar Jr to pin there hopes on. Dirk Bessi was drafted first overall as a 16-yr-old this year. He obviously at his age wasn’t as well rounded as Dogar, but the scouts were confident he had the tools to be up there with Dogar before we were halfway through the 50’s. His first pro start on June 9th was a bit shaky, he allowed three runs & four walks in a loss to eventual Chinese Baseball League leaders Shenyang, but he had gone seven innings in his first game, he was a boy against men, still being over a month short of his 17th birthday. He was inconsistent throughout his rookie season and finished with 12 starts and a 3-5 record, he struckout 60 batters in 65 IP, but allowed ten homers and ended with an ERA just shy of 5.00. This week he’ll finish his rookie pro year off with a possible four starts in A Ball at South Guam. His figures aren’t Dogar-like yet, after all he’s a 17-yr-old kid, but the stamina is there, his pitch movement & control has already shown an improvement. His elite pitch is his changeup, but his sinker & slider are not far behind, if only he can show his expected development by 2054 or 55 we could be seeing Doger and Bessi as the 1-2 punch in Riyadh.

It's a big ask though, Dogar has to overcome his major injury and come back as good as he was shaping up to be whilst the 17-yr-old kid has to keep working hard, learning, trying to live up to his potential. But all of Riyadh hopes, they haven’t had a lot to be happy about in their few years so far, so the fingers, toes and everything else that before the next decade is through, they will have a home-produced one & two in the rotation
