It wasn’t a particularly good week all three wins in the middle being bookended by two losses at the start and finish, but we did set a few Riyadh records. Our win over Tripoli set both records although we almost blew the win, Kevin Morales pitched seven plus innings and with the win, his 13th, became the most winningest Red Crescent pitcher in a single season, overtaking Sean Gardner’s 12. All three of our runs came in the fifth innings and we almost blew it in the ninth when Constantino Teixeira gave up two runs, but Fernando Guerrero came in to get the final out and seal Morales’ record win. The game itself also set another record as it was watched by 27,976 which is the largest crowd ever at The People’s Palace. The end of the Tripoli series also saw another landmark as the Red Crescents passed the 1,600,000 through the gates mark, making the total attendance this season the best ever.
Only three wins, despite a losing week, moved Riyadh forward and we now need seven more wins for our record high. It’s been an amazing season as we’ve made so many advances, broken so many records and there’s still more to come with 38 games still to go of 2049. Our main concern now is how we are going to extend Morales and Grady Fern without breaking the bank? We’ll have about 11 or 12 million more coming off the payroll at the end of the season thanks to players non-tendered, vesting options not made or team options not picked up, but that’s money not available to offer to Kevin or Grady now. It’s a bit of a quandary?
