Thoughts of 2050

As 2049 rapidly draws to a close, the Front Office is holding more and more meetings with the scouting department trying to figure out how Riyadh can carry on the improvement in 2050. Several changes will have to be made for next season and the farm still isn’t capable of delivering many, if any, players capable of playing in the UMEBA to the level that would be required.

The biggest dilemma we will face is that both Kevin Morales and Grady Fern are out of contract after 2049. Despite being 38-yrs-old we feel Morales, as almost certainly the single season record win holder, is worthy of another contract and Fern has been a solid second baseman in his three years with us, the trick will be is how to extend both of them and leave enough cap space to deal with the rest of the roster. One factor that will help is the impending loss of the Red Crescents’ greatest player, Masaki Sato, Sato holds just about every batting record for Riyadh, but has decided to test free agency. He may well find himself seriously disappointed as several other big 1B/DH types appear to be more than likely on the market as well. It does though free up around $6 million that we can put in the Morales / Fern pot.

We will also have several other departures that will help to fund our development (rebuilding?). We definitely won’t be picking up Backup catcher Peter Davenport’s team option, he certainly hasn’t shown us that he’s in any way worth the $6.5 million we would have to pay him. Michael Blankenship will unfortunately only be in Riyadh for one year of his three-year deal as due to the emergence of Roy MacGugan, it is unlikely that he will meet his vesting option and we won’t be renegotiating his deal. Sancho Castillo will also be non-tended as he isn’t worth his arbitration estimate of $3 million. The final departure we are toying with is competitive balance player Jose Leyva, his season was ended early by a major injury, but to be honest his defensive prowess and the fact we only have to pay him $1.5 million will probably keep him in Riyadh for the final year of his 3-year deal.

The pitching staff will face major upheaval as well. We still don’t know whether Umar “All-Star Jr” Doger will ever return as good as he was shaping up to be, so might have to plan for his replacement. We also hold a team option on the disappointing Jose Lima, he hasn’t performed anywhere near as well as we hoped, but at just $1.5 million I doubt that we could find anything much better for that amount. We might just have to take a gamble on his final year. We really would like back the $10.5 million we owe the extremely disappointing Romeu Tameiro, but I doubt we would be so lucky as to have him opt out of his remaining contract years. The jury is still out on Terrance Kelly, his first six UMEBA starts have been mixed, but we could find ourselves looking for three new guys for the rotation. That would certainly make repeating this season’s success a hard task. The bullpen hasn’t been too bad this year but still may see some churn amongst the older minimum salary guys, not too much of a problem as average bullpen arms are generally ten a penny.
