Riyadh slump back into losing habits

Jun 9 @ Tripoli L 3-8
Jun 11 v Jerusalem L 0-3

Jun 12 v Jerusalem W 3-2
Jun 13 v Jerusalem W 2-1

Jun 14 @ Manama L 3-9
Jun 15 @ Manama L 2-4

Riyadh sans Doger slumped back into their old losing habits and not only losing but taking a couple of heavy beatings too. The end-of-week losses to Manama really hurt too, a return to a 2048 trademark, the 0-2 end of week and more so as it helped Manama get a little further away from the Red Crescents. The pack also closed up to just a single game behind with Baghdad somehow playing the Riyadh stooge. It’s a measure of how far we have come this year that we are actually considering who the leader of the BURT is, and that we actually have a chasing pack rather than needing binoculars to see even to team directly above us. Lets hope that this week isn’t the start of the complete crash.

Nick Garner, burned for five runs & four walks in his first start back in the UMEBA, showed he might not be the answer to our vacant rotation slot. He won’t be sent back to Port Windies just on the strength of that, but another poor performance and it may well be a sad trip to Africa for him. That possibility was increased as we picked up a couple of minor league free agent pitchers during the week. 28-yr-old former starter for Long Beach in the BBA, Terrance Kelly, signed with a hefty bonus cheque. The fans liked that signing and although we sent him to Triple-A we fully expect his stay there to be short. Our other addition was 27-yr-old Alex Corona, formally of Las Vegas in the BBA and more recently has had two years in Baghdad. He was sent right off to Riyadh to replace James Matarazzo in the bullpen. Matarazzo had an 0-2 record with an ERA approaching six and a WHIP approaching two.

21-yr-old Finnish 2047 #2 overall draft pick, middle infielder Jouo Rovanpera, looks to be the next home drafted cab off the rank. He has just been promoted to Port Elizabeth and if all goes well there could be looking at a late 2050/early 2051 arrival in Riyadh. He’s still learning his defensive work, not embarrassing at 2B or SS, but needs a bit of polish yet. His bat though is working as he has 58 homers in around 250 minor league games so far, spread between all levels as he has climbed the ranks; over 100 walks in that timescale is also showing that he is not a swing and hope merchant either. All our 2049 draft picks are now signed up and arrived in Taipei with Riyadh paying out just less than $2.3m in bonus payments out of the $5.7m we had allocated. Good deals or just a sign that maybe this year’s draft picks aren’t the same calibre as the last few years? Time will tell. Back in Riyadh Masaki Sato is hitting the covers off the ball and isn’t far short of a pace to get near his 2046 high of 49 home runs. Moving Ricardo Esparza into right field in place of the 0-20 slumping Vinnie Coalman has proved a good move, in his first real starting job in Riyadh he has 17 hits in his last sixteen outings and has added a couple of homers too.
