The first week A.D. (After Doger) was a complete shambles in the Riyadh offices. The secretaries, the clerks, the other office staff just wouldn’t do any work. All they did was sit waving their arms, crying their eyes out and wailing. God, the wailing! If there’s one thing the Middle Eastern women can do it is wail. It was as if the whole franchise shut down, nothing got done in any of our affiliates either. Players notified of moving orders got stuck for days in the staff offices waiting for confirmation and travel orders, pitchers due to move up or down missed their spot and had to pitch in organisations where they shouldn’t have been. Doger and Cam Woods were late getting assigned to our IL list. The most glaring error was with our newly drafted players; most of them had already returned their signed contracts and had been told to travel to Taipei Airport where that they would be picked up and introduced to the billets they would be spending the next year in Rookie Ball. I fielded several calls from them as of course I seemed to be the only person in Riyadh capable of answering a phone without just wailing down the line, all I could do was advise them to check into the Airport hotel and someone would eventually collect them. Apparently, they had to wait a week and missed the first game of Rookie Ball, luckily, we had kept enough returning players in Chinese Taipei to fulfil the first fixture of the season.

The only other major faux par was of course Doger wasn’t on the IL and so Nick Garner hadn’t arrived from Port Elizabeth. This led to the bullpen making the start against Manama, Pedro Ortiz took the start, celebrating his recent one-year contract extension by making his first Riyadh start. He managed to go four innings, giving up three hits and two runs as well as three walks & three strikeouts. In a wild game the rest of the bullpen wasn’t as good. The Red Crescents did however take the win as Grady Fern’s single in the bottom of the ninth drove in Daryl Pris for a walkoff 11-10 win. It was one of our three wins as we registered three wins and three losses in this strange week. All three losses were by a single run and two of them were against the Pearls who were clear at the top of the BURT división. That left us 3.5 games back of them with the second best RD in the UMEBA. What a turnaround this season is proving to be, the one thing we definately need to fix though is our bullpen’s perpensity to give up one-run games; in 2049 we only have recorded 10 wins in 22 one-run games.

Our worst performer of the week was Vinnie Coalman who was mired in an 0-20 slump in his last six games. He had been hit had by the loss of his roommate Doger, he had managed four walks, two of which he had come round to score on, but nothing else so he will find himself riding the pines next week as Ricardo Esparza will have a spell as the starting right fielder. The week’s hero was Juan Martinez who became the first batter to have a three HR game for Riyadh when he launched three over the fences in Tripoli. Homers in the 2nd, 4th and 8th innings helped the Red Crescents win 7-3 and contributed five RBI.
