Minor League game of the week
Port Elizabeth Windies @ Ndali Barons

On Sunday, May 30th Port Elizabeth travelled to the Ndali Barons, Triple-A affiliate of the Tripoli Piranhas. The Barons are absolutely rock bottom of the African Baseball Alliance having just won 7 out of their 53 games. The reason for that is quite clear to see, Ndali only have 15 fit players on their roster including just seven position players. In game after game they recruit street urchins to play in their ranks as ringers listed on the team sheets as “Joe Unknown”. In this particular game they played five street urchins, but we didn’t show them any mercy.

Barons’ starter Cipriani Carpeggiani (0-5) managed a mere five outs before getting the hook, he had already given up two homers and was on the hook for eight runs. Unfortunately playing quietly in the ‘pen was just three street urchins, all the Barons had available to pitch. After three innings the Windies had sent six balls screaming over the fences with four of them being multi-run homers and the score was already 14-1. In the fourth innings, a rare scoreless inning for Port Elizabeth, the Windies starter Karl Beerens had a bit of a wobble. Losing concentration, he gave up six hits and a wild pitch while only getting two batters out. This led to five Baron runs crossing the plate and Beerens getting lifted for Jesus Garcia to get the final out, it might have been harsh as Beerens was still 14-6 ahead but it was a decisive message – don’t lose focus.

A 3-run homer in the fifth and four walks in the seventh leading to another three runs left Port Elizabeth 20-6 up at the seventh innings stretch. There wasn’t a lot of feeling as the fans that remained sang “. . . if they don’t win it’s a shame”. A run in the bottom of the seventh and two in the bottom of the eighth gave the Barons some sort of minute hope, but the Windies added two more in the top of the ninth to seal the deal. A 22-9 defeat for the home side, but not their worst as they had already lost 23-2 earlier in the month.

Lucio Becerra was the hero of the day for Port Elizabeth. The former Riyadh backup outfielder went 5 for 5 with a walk and set the Port Elizabeth regular season single game records for homers (3), hits (5), runs (5) and RBI (9).

The team that baseball forgot...

Pretty impressive they've won any games at all with no 1B, 2B, or SS...
