The Longest Game

Games between the two UMEBA expansion sides have usually been roller coaster rides and this series produced more of the same with the first game ending up as the Red Crescents’ longest ever game to date. Really though it was almost two games in length with a tight pitchers’ duel sandwiched between explosive offensive power.

Cairo had the only hit of the first innings and opened the scoring in the top of the second when the Pharaohs hit Riyadh starter Ricardo Quadrado for two homers, a 2-run shot followed by a solo shot, to go 3-0 up. Riyadh clawed one back in the bottom half of the innings and then used homers by Masaki Sato in the fourth and Roy MacGugan in the seventh to tie the game at three.

Quadrado went eight innings and left with a no-decision, both sides then sent four pitchers to the mound, and they kept all comers off the board for seven more innings. James Matarazzo snuffed out the last two Cairo batters in the 15th, passing the longest game to date for the Red Crescents, but unfortunately the Pharaohs found the answer to him in the 16th. Two walks, two hits and a sac bunt plated three runs leaving Cairo odds-on favourites to take the game. Lucio Gomez took to the mound for Cairo in the bottom of the 16th to close out the game, he quickly sat two down, but ran into trouble as Riyadh touched him for three straight hits and loaded the bases.

Jose Leyva stepped into the batters box and breathed deeply. Gomez stared hard at his catcher, shaking off the first two signals, Leyva held up his hand and stepped out of the box. Pulling at his gloves he stared around the field, tapped his bat against his foot and stepped back in. Gomez quickly came set and launched the ball; time stood still as Leyva’s bat swung it’s arc whilst the crowd exploded in a roar as the contact produced a loud crack. Gomez whipped his head round and grimaced, the Pharaoh’s left fielder turned round to start to retreat, but it was far too late. The ball sailed long & high, 373 feet into the left field stands . . .

GRAND SLAM RIYADH !

The scoreboard clicked up the four runs and shone brightly in in the night as Thursday clicked over to Friday. Nearly a quarter of an hour after midnight, 5.09 after the first pitch, Leyva had ended the Red Crescents longest ever game. Sixteen innings of play and Riyadh had won 7-6.

In the Middle East, that's the sort of thing that can get a reliever beheaded.
