Another fine mess . . .

Apr 1 @ Beirut L 2-6
Apr 2 @ Beirut L 8-10
Apr 5 v Baghdad L 2-4

Apr 6 v Baghdad W 7-3

The 2049 has arrived and once more we started with our traditional Opening Day loss, we're now 1-3 on the season's first day. Beirut handed out the beating this time, a change from Manama I suppose. After we had blown away the season’s high hopes by being swept by the Cedars we returned home to the excitement of our first ever drafted player, Umar “All-Star Jr” Doger, taking the mound a few weeks after his 20th birthday, against Baghdad at the People’s Palace. “All Star Jr” as he is now known had a rude awakening in his first ever UMEBA game, he shipped three hits, two walks and three runs in his first half innings. He did recover enough to last six innings while giving up only one further run and walk, but it wasn’t what the crowd expected from the much-hyped youngster. Despite our opening home series starting on a Monday, usually a very poor drawing day crowd-wise, we managed an attendance over 27,000 and maintained that the next day as well. The Kings became our first victims of 2049 in the final game of the week as we notched five runs in the first four innings. Ricardo Quadrado gave three of them back in the fifth but hung on to pick up the win, his 25th for the Red Crescents.

Last year’s Rule 5 success, Vinnie Coalman, went off like an express train and hit three homers in the first week, not bad as he only hit four in his 128 games in 2048; he also legged out our first (and so far only) triple of the season. Michael Blankenship celebrated winning the starting 1B role by hitting .533/.529/.933 in his first week in Riyadh. Former undisputed “All Star” Diesel “All-Star” Dave hit his first homer of the season but finisher the week with a .062 batting average
