Hitting by default (2049-13)

Position players sorted, but maybe by default

The final cuts are made of the players hanging around in the dugout, but several starter roles were handed out to the best of the worst rather than a strong fit for the role. It was no surprise that Diesel “All-Star” Dave will once more be the main man behind the plate with Pablo Espinoza backing him up, there just wasn’t anybody else.

Grady Fern, Jose Leyva, Vinnie Coalman & Juan Martinez were all nailed on virtually by the fact there wasn’t, again, any realistic competition to beat them out while new boy Daryl Pris didn’t have to work to hard to outshine the pretty poor bunch of SS contenders.

First base proved a tight battle between Michael Blankenship and Roy MacGugan with Blankenship using his experience to showcase his power, grabbing the starting role. Many expected MacGugan to head for Port Elizabeth, given his options left, but that’s to the versatility of Juan Luis Manuel, we were able to keep him up in Riyadh as a backup to both 1B & DH. Rule 5 pick Issac Emmott as did enough to convince us that his versatility at 2B, 3B and SS in defence would allow us to keep him on the roster as a second infield bench player.

Anastasio Gullen Will have first shot at the hot corner after Sancho Castillo missed time due to his mercy trip to the Dominican Republic and predictably last year’s rule 5 success Umar Mutemi was optioned to Port Elizabeth after Masaki Sato returned to the DH role. Sato didn’t exactly play well in spring camp but how could you have demoted the team’s leading all-time player?

We are still hot on the tail of one more player, both a pitcher and a catcher have decided to reopen negotiations after laughing off our initial offers, both could really add a solid look to our lineup. The real shame is that it’s really a case of one or the other, we haven’t enough cap room to add both. Amongst all the final cuts we were able to announce that we had sold the most season tickets in our short history. Still charging the $10 we charged during the 2048 regular season we have now sold 11,464 season plans, almost 25% up on our 2048 sales. We’ve just about maxed out the salary cap now which means we’re predicted to lose around $5 million this season, but if we can really use the new players to improve the performances we might eat into that if the attendances hold up better than they did in 2048
