The team is taking shape (2049-11)

The team begins to take shape

Two-thirds of the way through spring training and the Riyadh roster is beginning to take shape, or at least we are beginning to see where we could possibly be. A day after his 20th birthday Umar Doger picked up his first spring training win, a 7-1 victory at Baghdad, he pitched his four innings giving up four hits, a run and striking out five batters. In three spring starts he has now pitched 12 innings allowing nine hits, four runs (only one, a homer, earned) while walking four and striking out 13 batters. I was pleased to tell him when he returned to the locker room that he had made the 2049 rotation, he was to be the first home-drafted Riyadh player to step on the field for the Red Crescents. The players immediately told me that his nickname was now to be “All-Star Jr”, Umar had spent his entire career since his childhood in the Shinpokh slums with the moniker of “All-Star”, it was that clear he was going to make the top level. Now though with Diesel “All-Star” Dave on the roster the players had taken to calling him “All-Star Jr” and they wanted it to stick. They were that confident in the young Pakistani. We have more or less decided his rotation mates too, we probably have just one slot open. Karel Beerens has pitched himself from a long shot to a contender; his three starts have also just brought one run allowed, only four hits and one walk while striking out 11. If his coaches had better reports on him he’d be a cert, as it is, he’s still on the cusp. Angel Romero seems to be pitching himself towards a seat in the bullpen, but we still have a few irons in the FA fire, waiting for pitchers demands to cool.

One of our third base contenders, Sancho Castillois a native of the Dominican Republic and has been seriously affected by the dreadful earthquake there. We have given him a week’s leave to go home, but to be honest it couldn’t have come at a worse time for him. He’s right in that third base mix, the absence now though will probably give Anastasio Guillen a leg up in the hot corner race, Castillo may find himself coming back to another year in Port Elizabeth. New signing Daryl Pris seems to have nailed down the starting shortstop role while the biggest dustup left appears to be at first base. Michael Blankenship is duking it out with Roy MacGugan. Roy has all the tools to win the role, but Michael is using all his years of experience to nose ahead with eight games left in spring. It could come down in the end to Roy having options left while Michael doesn't.

We still have 35 in camp, three of the cuts will probably come from the bullpen, leaving five to in all probability to be cut from the batters. We have possibly five of those eight cuts already in mind, so still hope for a few, the unluckiest one could be Umar Mutemi, a successful Rule 5 pick with 129 appearances in 2048, looks to be squeezed out with Masaki Sato returning to his favourite DH role. Mutemi just doesn’t have the defensive skills to play anywhere else and now seems to be pinning his hopes on an injury callup.
