Triple A: Port Elizabeth Windies

The Windies recorded their highest ever win tally and finished a distant third in the ABA which should have been their first ever post-season appearance, but the League Commissioner inexplicably cancelled all the ABA playoffs and anointed the Brazzaville Bolts as the 2048 champions without a game played.

April started the year 14-9 before May brought them back closer to .500 as Port Elizabeth could only win 13 of their 28 games. An inconsistent June (15-13) and July (11-18) left them 53-55 on the season, under .500 for the first time at the end of a month in 2048. August, they won 14 and lost 14, their tally now of 67 wins was already better than 2047’s tally. The Windies finished the year on a hot streak winning all eight games in September to finish with 75 wins, their best ever tally and it could have been better as Port Elizabeth were -5 on their expected pythag record of 80 wins. They were in third place, 10 games behind Brazzaville and Luanda, both locked on 85-59. It was all to no avail anyway as the post season was cancelled completely. The total attendance through the gate in Port Elizabeth of 431,684 was almost 100,000 up on their previous best while the team ERA of 3.37 was the staff’s best ever.

26-yr-old Roy MacGugan had a breakout year, hitting 20+ homers for the first time and taking the team lead in nearly every batting stat & average. He had become an offensive god in the Triple-A side, leading in homers (21), RBI (68) and walks (69). The only other two players to top stats categories were Cam Woods who topped the team Triples with 4 and Ivan Gulledge who stole the most bases, being successful in 30 out of 40 attempts.

28-yr-old Karel Beerens led the team with 13 wins and had the best ERA (3.67), as well as leading several other pitching categories. It is thought though that he will not get promotion to Riyadh, his ship has sailed, his pitches are not dominant enough to face a full UMEBA season. The honour of promotion will almost certainly go to 2047’s #1 draft pick, Umar Doger who will be 20-yrs-old at the start of the 2049 season. Over the course of his first pro-baseball season Doger had started in Double-A before going on to make 14 starts in Triple-A; out of his combined 19 starts he posted nine wins without a single professional loss. The consensus opinion is that a 2049 Riyadh rotation spot is his to lose in Spring Training.
