Double A: Santiago Tabaqueros

It was a poor start to 2048 for the Tabaqueros which ultimately cost them any year-on-year progress. The recovery in the second half of the season was welcome though and the total attendance through the gate in Santiago was a record 286,668. An inconsistent start to April was ruined further by an eight-game losing streak in the later part of the month leading to an 8-13 record to open 2048. May was even worse, seven defeats in the month’s opening eight games put Santiago at the foot of the table. With nearly three defeats coming to each win in the month they ended up with 20 defeats in May and an overall record of just 17-33. Severn wins in the first 10 games of June put the Tabaqueros in good heart as some of the better players started to get promotion from South Guam and below. A four-game losing streak threatened to derail the progress, but Santiago held on to record the first month over .500 as they finished 14-13 in June. July opened even better as the Tabaqueros went 8-2 in the opening games. A further 8-2 streak put them 47-50 overall and with great hope of saving the season. Only wining four games in the final games of the month slowed that, but they were still 19-10 on the month. A seven-game winning streak in the middle of August saved another inconsistent month and Santiago finished 15-13 on the final full month, including a 2-1 win, in sixteen innings, over Santa Cruz who already had 65 wins at that time. Their six games in September ended 3-3 giving Santiago a final record of 68-72, almost at .500 but seven wins below their 2047 highpoint.

23-yr-old Ivan Thomas, who has had two stints in Riyadh since being drafted from Manama in the 2045 Rule 5 draft, led the Tabaqueros in all batting averages, hits (116), total bases (208), home runs (20) and RBI (74). At 23-yrs-old he still has time maybe to work his way back to Riyadh, he has to improve at first base though and have as good a season in Port Elizabeth in 2049.

In his second year in Santiago 23-yr-old Uberto Casale was the star pitcher posting an 11-9 record in his 28 starts leading the Tabaqueros in most stats – wins (11), ERA (2.80, games started (28), innings pitched (161), strikeouts (156) as well as pitching the teams only shutout. He also kept the opponents averages down to the team’s lowest levels and recorded just 2.57 BB/9 and 6.88 H/9.
Jacob Norris was the workhorse out of the ‘pen, pitching in a team leading 53 games, leading the team with 16 saves while posting a respectable 6-4 record with a 2.98 ERA ; he also struckout 118 batters in 123 innings
