Swift moves made by Riyadh in FA (2049-3)

Riyadh move fast to start the replenishment

Hardly had the half-full bus full of rejects left the training complex for the Riyadh airport than the wheels of replenishment were turning. Within the first week of Free Agency the Red Crescents had signed up several new players, the fans though were not so sure. A couple they believed might actually improve the sorry state of the Riyadh franchise, but more, they believed, were merely warm bodies to fill roster spots. It was unfortunate that the Red Crescents were still shopping in the bargain basement bucket despite their millions of cap space. It was just a fact that to fill the roster they would have to sign many cut-price deals rather than a slew of stars.

The first player to sign was 32-yr-old Pedro Ortiz who has made 229 BBA appearances, mainly for Madison. His career BBA figures are 14-21 with 10 saves and a 4.09 ERA, apart from last year when the Wolves used him as a member of the rotation, he has always produced a positive WAR, abet a minute one. He was signed on a one-year $850,000 deal

32-yr-old Constantino Teixeira was signed on a two-year $3.7m deal. He has made 147 appearances in the BBA over the last ten years, sparingly used he has compiled a 9-11 record with 2 saves. Not really a strikeout pitcher, he has a decent fastball and a forkball giving up just 138 earned runs in 215 innings pitched. It is hoped he will fit in as part of a strong triumvirate at the back of the bullpen.

The first position player to sign was 30-yr-old Michael Blankenship on a 3-year $5.3m deal, two of which are options. He gives us a solid defensive first baseman following the departure of Clive Timberlake. The plan is to shift Masaki Sato back to DH and, providing Blankenship can hit, he will be the starting 1B. This will seriously put the roster spots of Ernesto Sousa and Umar Mutemi in danger, it is already been rumoured that Sousa is being shopped around.

32-yr-old Daryl Pris has also arrived on a 2-year deal worth $3.7m. He’s a decent enough defensive shortstop, but might struggle with the bat like so many we have tried in that position, at best it looks like he’ll need a platoon partner against lefties. Pris is a career .236 BBA hitter though in his 1,339 appearances for California and Jacksonville where he has been for the last seven years. With over 1,000 BBA hits and 474 walks in just shy of 4,500 AB’s we feel it’s a good possibility that he might be able to transfer some of that across to the UMEBA and besides that only his first year is guaranteed.

That’s a theme amongst all of the multiple year contracts signed, only the first year is actually guaranteed in each case. Worried that they are all thirtysomethings, the club has protected itself with a combination of Vesting and team options. We have been fair in that all the targets are eminently obtainable, but will protect us if any of these new arrivals suddenly fall off the cliff.

Much what I was alluding to, you just offer anything that looks close to an improvement and hope. Sometimes the good ones sign, sometimes the dodgy ones signs. You don't really know what they'll do till it's into the season and then it's too late lol
