Unbelievable things do happen
Just once in a while, unbelievable things do happen, with the Red Crescents all but writing last week off, the team comes through with four wins and passes their 2047 total. They fought their way to two more one-win triumphs, making their 1-win tally 4-2 for September and grabbed a win off of Baghdad in the 14th innings ( our joint second longest ever game, both wins & both against Baghdad). We now finish off the 2048 home season looking for a sweep of Baghdad before heading out for the final road trip of 2048, 3 games against Jerusalem and three against Mumbai. It will all be in the books then, at least one more win than 2047, so an improvement of sorts (hopefully four or five more than 2048 in the end). Around $23 million or more will be coming off the payroll at the end of the season which will go a long way to the complete rebuild of the pitching staff that is needed. The only worry now is the availability of those pitchers required to fill the gaps. Decent pitchers very rarely come available and those that do would desire nearly all that $23m war chest, so in all probability we will have to settle for one or two mid-grade starters to link up with Ricardo Quadrado and Jose Lima while adding perhaps three pretty decent bullpen arms. We can all dream, can’t we?
Unfortunately, I have my doubts about our final road trip. A lot of the guys are very happy about passing last year’s total already and I’ve heard whispers that the intention is to make the outbound flight a real party affair, that coupled with the fact that quite a few of the players will be making their last trip with the Red Crescents before their time with Riyadh, and maybe baseball, comes to an end, might will make it difficult to keep the guy’s minds on playing. They’ll only let themselves down at the end of the day, we’re pretty easy-going here in Riyadh and let the guys express themselves, but when they catch on with another team, they’ll find there’s a lot more restrictions & rules. They’ll be longing for the good old days at Riyadh, we might not win many games, but we have a few pissups along the way
