In their third year as an affiliate of Riyadh the Taipei finished comfortably above .500 again. They didn’t quite manage 2047’s exploits though, missing the post season by three games. All of 2047’s top draft picks had moved on, 2048's top pick started at Double-A and although Riyadh had a couple of extra top picks this year, they used them to take flyers on very young players who had a much higher upside than the 18 or 19-yr-olds they might normally have been expected to take there. For the first time in their history the team batting average was over .300 (.308) but the pitching ERA went up almost a point as the standard of new recruits were generally younger with all of the development that it entails. The crowd appreciated it though and the total attendance figure of 88,722 through the gate was a record for the Taipei.

June was a good start for the Chinese with them winning 16 out of 27 games including opening with a 4-game win streak and nine wins in their first ten games. A 6-game losing streak in the month’s final week might well have put the early mockers on their playoff run. July was a bit more inconsistent, reflected in the month’s tally of 15-14 although still six games over .500 overall. The season’s final month opened with two straight losses, but Taipei recovered to see August out with an 8-4 record, ten games behind Pennant winners Tianjin who swept us home and away with some heavy beatings at their place. Taiwan took the wildcard spot, we only managed to take a one-run home win against them in our six games with them, probably the crux of the post season miss right there in those four series. The pitchers gave up the fewest walks in the CBL (164) and struckouit the most (728) but were steadily mid to low table in most other stat categories; the batters were grease lightning on the bases, stealing a league high 77 bases while striking out the fewest times (510), but while the rest of the stats reflected our place as a top-3 side, they weren’t good enough to move us into the elite echelons.

18-yr-old outfielder Haunio Ekela finally got the lightbulb moment, Originally drafted by Baghdad in 2046 (3rd round) he was released that year and snapped up by Riyadh. This year his hot bat produced a ,415 batting average, but with not much defensive ability and only two homers in three Rookie Ball seasons he doesn’t seem to have a ton of upside. Our 2048 second round draft pick, 17-yr-old infielder Kilipaki Lugini, led the team in walks (37), stolen bases (27) and RBI (38) and finished the year off with a couple of A-Ball appearances before a strained back ended his season prematurely.

The star on the mound was 2048 sixth-rounder 20-yr-old Hiuwe Mearann. Originally undrafted in 2045, he went to college and appeared in two International Finishing Consortium All-Star Games before being drafted by Riyadh. After going 5-2 in 12 Rookie Ball starts, he went 2-2 in four A ball starts and even posted a win in a Double-A start, pitching into the sixth while giving up just three hits and no runs. In Taipei he kept the opponents he faced to their lowest averages, stuck out the most (91), had the best winning percentage (.714) with the most starts (12) and the lowest ERA (3.31). 19-yr-old Williama Davida, in his third season with the Chinese, got the stopper role and turned on the style. Posting a 5-3 record while pitching in the most games (32) he also racked up 13 saves and a 2.24 ERA. Striking out 85 batters in 56 innings pitched he was promoted to A-ball South Guam once the Taipei season ended and picked up two wins, three saves and a 2.05 ERA in thirteen appearances there.
