50 wins up, but not much time for more (2048-31)

Four measly wins to better last year?

Last week was probably the best we could have done, nicking a game off both Beirut and Baghdad. It meant we passed 50 wins and need just four more wins to beat last season’s total of 54 wins. Home or away, it doesn’t matter, we’ve lost 49 at each, extra innings games we’re all square - five wins, five defeats. In one-run games we’ve only won 15 out of 38 such games, but we’re 2-1 in September one-run games since we have added to the number of arms in the ’pen with roster expansion. In all honesty though we’ll be targeting the final road trip of the season for the bulk of those four wins needed; our last two series of 2048 are three games in Jerusalem and three in Mumbai. We’ve won 16 out of our 30 meetings this year with the Hebrew Hammers, we must have a chance of perhaps grabbing a couple off of them and maybe Mumbai will have lost interest by then, instead of resting players for a possible four-peat of the United Cup, they could be down in the dumps having missed the playoffs for the first time since 2044. The sad fact is that the -3 games on our pythag record could be the difference between improving on 2047 or not.

Bert Hackworth, back in UMEBA, is obviously keen to open extension talks but no wins this season and only six last year means he has two hopes – Bob Hope and No Hope ! Ricardo Quadrado has finally earned his 10th win of the season and become only the second pitcher in Riyadh history to achieve that landmark ( such as it is). Jose Lima, stuck on nine wins, has probably two starts left to reach that magic mark. The final Triple-A game saw our 2048 #1 pick, Umar Doger, on the mound and although he didn’t pick up the win, he wasn’t tagged with a loss either. So, he finishes his first pro year making 19 starts, mostly in Triple-A, posting a 9-0 overall record with 30 runs given up and 108 batters struckout in the 113 innings he’s pitched.

The batters look a shambles in a lot of places with the exception of Diesel “All-Star” Dave and Masaki Sato. Dave has to some extent curbed his strikeouts and might not even reach 200 while getting 35 or more homers, Sato meanwhile, virtually holds every Riyadh single season & career record there is. He has one team option left ( obviously going to be picked up) and then we will be doing everything in our power to ensure he will finish his career with us and go on to be a legendary staff member as well. Vinnie Coalman will have a weeks rest thanks to a mild abdominal strain, hopefully coming back fresh for those vital last two series of 2048. We will cover him by swapping Myeong-hwan Kim across to right and giving Lucio Becerro, hitting .291 as the fourth outfielder, the start in left.
